This Olmsted Falls Bulldogs team is loaded with weapons on both sides of the court all four quarters long, and now that Allison Milligan has found her shooting groove, they are next level good. Milligan shook off a slow scoring start to the year and had a big night tonight, leading the Bulldogs to a 67-30 victory over Amherst. The senior had 13 points to lead the Bulldogs.
It was the usual total team effort for Olmsted Falls as once again everyone got into the act. Sara Glover scored 9, Noernberg had 5, Kalich with 6, Senior leader Lauren Galaska had 8. For Galaska, it wasn’t just scoring as tonight she did it all with stops on defense and several rebounds. Galaska was everywhere!
Also scoring for the Bulldogs was Grace Simon with 9 points on three 3 pointers. Paige Kohler didn’t shoot much, but she didn’t have too as she picked up 7 in the game. As I’ve said in the past, they are relentless on defense and unselfish on offense, that is the recipe for success in any team sport.
For the Comets, they will continue to take some lumps this season, but they showed at times tonight they could play with the best of them. They scored early in every quarter, but had long draughts in the second and fourth quarters that hurt them badly.
Leading the Comets in scoring was Kayla Ferancy with 8 points, including hitting two from beyond the arc. Jules Gelding put in six points, including all four Comets second quarter points. Bradyn Silvasy had four points, all coming in the fourth.
Also, for the Comets, a point that should be noted is that all six of their freshmen scored tonight. Those six players being Kayla Ferancy, Kristen Keley, Bradyn Silvasy, Natalie Pleban, Ava Darmos and Peyton Roberts. Trust me, that may seem like a small thing now, but it will eventually become a major thing. The freshmen totaled 24 of the Comets 30 points. They will continue to mesh and get better over time.
It looked in the early moments of the contest that an upset may be brewing as the Comets led 8-7 with 3:35 to play in the opening quarter. 4 of their 5 freshman starters had scored to earn them the lead. It was then that the Bulldogs let loose on a 13-5 run to close the quarter with a 20-13 lead.
Allison Milligan had her best start to a game this season and returned to 2019-2020 form with a big 7-point first quarter. Lauren Galaska had a stretch in the first quarter in which she made a bucket, and then got an instant steal on the inbound to score another bucket for 4 points in just six seconds of game time.
Grace Simon nailed a three and Sarah Glover along with Lauren Noernberg both had buckets off the bench to go along with one from Mia Kalich for the 20-point opening quarter. The top scorer of the quarter for Amherst was the freshman Kayla Ferancy.
The second quarter was all Bulldogs as they used a suffocating defense to create nearly ten Comet turnovers in the quarter alone. They held the Comets to only four points, all of which from Jules Gelding with the 3rd and 4th points coming at the buzzer. The Bulldog defense was flying to the ball and the Comets had no answers.
On the other end it was more of the same as they passed the ball around until someone was open. This allowed Sarah Glover to cash in four more, while Allison Milligan remained hot from the field with four more, giving her 11 in the half alone.
Lauren Galaska nailed two more foul shots while Grace Simon buried her second three ball of the game. Paige Kohler scored her first points of the game at the 4:40 mark, nailing a three ball to advance the lead. By the time halftime arrived, the Bulldogs led by 21 at 38-17.
The Bulldogs used their well-balanced attack of constant ball movement combined with aggressive defense to build their lead to 54-24. The third quarter saw yet another three pointer by Simon, her third on the night along with one from Glover as well. Kayla Ferancy of Amherst hit her second long ball of the game as well in the quarter.
The fourth quarter began to show just how deep this Bulldogs team is as Emily Scina (4), Katie Voisinet (2) Ashley Keener (2) and Danielle Cameron (2) all came off the bench to score. By the time it was all said and done, 11 Olmsted Falls Bulldogs had a marking on the score sheet today as they cruised to the 67-30 victory.
