Canton, OH – The Maria Stein Marion Local Flyers picked up their 12th title (all since 2000) with a 42-7 win over Newark Catholic Saturday morning.
The Flyers came out soaring in the first quarter.
Junior running back Darren Meier had a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put the Flyers on top, 7-0.
Following a punt, the offense got back to work.
On the next drive, Peyton Otte hooked up with Brady Ronnebaum for a 19-yard touchdown reception. This increased the lead to 14-0 with 2:13 left in the first.
He would later find Ronnebaum before the end of the quarter, this time for a 51-yard touchdown reception to increase the lead to 21-0.
Marion Local’s 21 first-quarter points tied their own record for most points scored in a quarter in a state championship game.
Newark Catholic got on the board in the second quarter when Cole Canter found Mason Hackett for a ten-yard score. This cut the deficit to 21-7.
They would try to gain some more momentum after forcing a Marion Local punt.
However, Aidan Eifert picked up an interception, and the Flyers were in business once again.
The Flyers moved the ball down the field with precision, capping the drive with a one-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Peyton Otte. This made the score 28-7 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Peyton Otte scampered for a 55-yard touchdown reception. This put the Flyers up 35-7. Otte had 11 carries for 55 yards with the two scores.
After a short punt, the Flyers struck again.
This time, Otte found Dylan Fleck for a 39-yard touchdown reception to increase the lead to 42-7. This would trigger the running clock, as it put the margin over 30 points.
Otte went 13 of 17 passing for 252 yards and three scores. Senior wide receiver Brady Ronnebaum had 6 catches for 124 yards and two scores.
Newark Catholic senior quarterback Cole Canter went 10 of 22 passing for 91 yards and a score.
