It was a season Danny Enovitch and the St. Edwards Eagles will never forget, and now they are your 2021 Division 1 State Champions. Enovitch had a marvelous night as he rushed for 210 yards on 32 carries, while scoring twice and leading the Eagles to a state championship with a 23-13 victory over Springfield.
The Eagles defense was once again incredible with 5 sacks, two interceptions and a blocked field goal.
Eagle quarterback Christian Ramos was efficient and effective as always. Ramos ran for 60 yards on 14 carries. He threw for 86 yards on 8 of 12 passing with a touchdown and no picks. Ramos did what he had to do to maintain possession and lead. He did both well!
The talk coming in was the explosiveness of Springfield Wildcat Quarterback Te’Sean Smoot and he showed that tonight. Smoot tossed for 349 yards and a touchdown. However, he was picked off twice and sack a whopping 5 times. The Wildcats had no run game to speak of, and it cost them.
Danny Enovitch made magic happen the first time he touched the ball with a 72-yard jaunt down the middle of the field. Springfield brought him down on the 1-yard line. Then, the Springfield defense stopped the Eagles on the next four straight attempts to score in nearly shocking fashion.
With a sudden burst of energy after the massive stop, the Wildcats came out gunning as Te’Sean Smoot hit Anthony Brown for 33 and Jayvin Norman for 29 to cruise down the field in no time flat. Smoot then did it with his legs as he took off for a 9-yard run on second and long to move the chains again. Their drive would stall as well however, and they too would turn the ball over on downs.
The Eagles put together another impressive drive the next time they had the ball as they went 72 yards on 11 plays, using up 4:23 off the clock. A nice mix of run and pass was capped off perfectly on a Danny Enovtich 17-yard touchdown. Enovitch had 115 yards on 9 carries as the first quarter wrapped up with the Eagles ahead 7-0.
The Eagles wasted no time scoring again only 11 seconds into the second quarter. A Wildcat snap flew over the head of punter Cole Yost in which had no choice but to land on it in the endzone. Just like that, moments into the quarter, it was 9-0 Eagles.
Taking advantage of the short field following the kickoff, St. Ed’s went right back to work putting up more points. This time around it was a beautiful Christian Ramos to Connor Goodall touchdown pass from 19 yards out to make it 16-0 with 7:47 still to play in the second half.
Springfield knew they needed an answer and clawed back. Smoot hit Bradley for 31 yards, and then Thigpen for 10 to get the Cats purring. They were then aided by a 15-yard facemask penalty to set them up at the Eagles 12. Te’Sean Smoot would finish it off with a 9-yard touchdown run to put the Wildcats right back in the game. The half would end by that same score.
After another Danny Enovitch touchdown made it 23-7, the hopes of the Wildcats comeback looked dim. However, they had a brief glimmer of hope when Smoot connected with Anthony Brown for a 20 yard touchdown only seconds into the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 23-13. The Wildcats however, couldn’t get any closer than that.
