Ohio State vs Rutgers Recap: Hot Start, Cold Finish for OSU

1st Half

On the first drive of the game for Ohio State, Master Teague was explosive. It was Jameson Williams who got the touchdown though after burning the defensive back and Fields found him open in the endzone. The 38-yard TD made it 7-0.

Rutgers responded by getting in a goal to go scenario. The Buckeyes defense held strong and a Rutgers holding penalty put the Scarlet Knights behind the chains. They then settled for a 30-yard Guy Fava field goal. (7-3)

Ohio State punted on their second drive in a spot where many might have expected the offense to stay on the field.

On the next drive from good starting field position, the OSU offense was back to business. On a read option, Fields kept the ball and leaped into the right corner of the endzone virtually untouched. The 7-yard TD run made it 14-3.

The punt two drives prior may have fooled Rutgers because Ryan Day’s team ran a well-executed fake punt with Steele Chambers. The conversion then put Fields back on the field and he made Rutgers pay. Rolling to his right, he connected with a closely covered Chris Olave for a 6-yard TD. (21-3)

The next drive for Rutgers ended in just two plays. Noah Vedral found Aron Cruickshank on the outside for a 2-yard gain, but linebacker Justin Hilliard quickly ripped the ball out and jumped on the fumble.

On the ensuing drive, Fields delivered a perfectly floated ball to Garrett Wilson in the back corner of the endzone. Wilson got his feet down and secured the catch before going out of bounds. The 8-yard TD was turning the game into a massive blowout at 28-3.

The Buckeyes had all the momentum and scored once more before the end of the half with a Master Teague 9-yard run. (35-3)
