Despite being a much-improved Rutgers team, #3 Ohio State came into the game as heavy favorites. The Buckeyes proved that in the first half.
Justin Fields and the air attack was once again nearly flawless, having no issue putting points on the board. Fields might have actually positioned himself as the front runner for the Heisman, just three games into the season.
The defense was great in the first half. They were getting pressure, tackling well and made everything difficult for the Rutgers offense.
Ryan Day even called for a fake punt that went to Steele Chambers, resulting in a first down. At that point it seemed like everything would go the way of the Buckeyes.
In the second half, Ohio State appeared to be too comfortable and switched off. The team was flat and were hit with way too many penalties on offense and defense. The backup defenders struggled tackling and Rutgers offense was able to capitalize over and over again.
Greg Schiano was not afraid to pull some tricks of his own out of the bag last night. We witnessed a designed touchdown to an offensive lineman, a lateral pass across the field on a punt – resulting in a touchdown and even so many moving pieces on each onside kick attempt. Schiano deserves a lot of credit for catching the Bucks napping.
As for the Ohio State offense, the line could not open up holes for the running backs to kill the game off. The only factor the Scarlet Knights could not stop was Fields and the receivers. It was enough to not let Rutgers back into the game.
Ohio State remains undefeated at 3-0 and Rutgers falls to 1-2.
