Unfortunately for Ohio State, another game cancellation resulted in a two-week game layoff. Each and every game is extremely precious in a shorten season. The only thing that can be done is adapt and the Buckeyes did just that. Rather than facing Illinois, the coaches and players turned their focus to Michigan State.
The Spartans come into this weekend with a 2-3 record with a new head coach and a rebuilding team. Mark Dantonio’s role in the MSU program history is a great one for Mel Tucker to try and fill. Tucker has plenty of coaching experience but was he the right choice for the Michigan State job? I don’t think so.
Tucker is a defensive minded person. In order to compete in the current high-powered offense era of college football, the Spartans needed to abandon the similar game plan to Dantonio.
Michigan State is still the same type of program. They are physical on defense and lack firepower on offense. Their only chance of defeating the Buckeyes is forcing early mistakes and then draining the clock down with the running game.
Ohio State will need to be sharp and play with speed on the offense. Getting the ball outside the hashes will hurt the Spartans. The fourth ranked Buckeyes will not only have a chance to move to 5-0, but the secondary is still waiting for redemption following the Indiana matchup.
