Indiana had not won against Ohio State in over 25 years and the ninth-ranked Hoosiers came into Columbus with some extra motivation to stop the streak.
The third-ranked Buckeyes were first to strike behind the skill of Justin Fields and Garrett Wilson. Despite the quick start, the rest of the first quarter was atrocious. Indiana was finally able to respond at the beginning of the second quarter.
Both defenses had the upper hand in the beginning of the game until the Buckeyes started to break through.
Ohio State’s 28-7 lead at halftime looked like a comfortable advantage – too large for Indiana to overcome.
Despite an inability to run the ball against the silver bullets, Michael Penix Jr. and Ty Fryfogle were unstoppable in the second half. Indiana quickly worked back and continued to cut into the OSU lead.
Indiana made it interesting at 42-35 with ten minutes left. A huge Pete Werner sack on a third down, late in the game, sealed it for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State remains undefeated at 4-0 and Indiana picks up their first loss of the season, dropping to 4-1.
Even though the Buckeyes won, Fields struggled with three interceptions, matching his career total with the Buckeyes.
The secondary was also dismantled, serving as a real concern for fans. They were disorganized, undisciplined and simply outplayed. It will be an area of focus for the coaching staff during this week of practices.
