Oberlin uses 16-2 run in fourth quarter to top Trinity, 65-59, in Monday matinee

Cleveland, Ohio – In a Monday afternoon matinee at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, the Oberlin Phoenix topped Trinity, 65-59.

Both teams traded baskets back and forth in the first quarter, and ended the quarter tied at 14.

Junior guard Braylyn Irby started the game with a jumper for Trinity. Ty Locklear followed with a three to give the Phoenix the lead. The two would trade buckets throughout the first, each scoring seven points in the quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same, with the teams constantly trading the lead back and forth.

Oberlin led 25-23 with 3:00 left in the half before back-to-back threes by Isaiah King gave Trinity a 29-25 lead.

Isaac Thompson would convert on the inside to tie up the game late in the second, but Braylyn Irby knocked down a three to end the quarter.

This connection from long range gave the Trojans a 33-30 lead going into the shortened halftime break.

In the third quarter, the teams scored 14 apiece. Trinity freshman Jayquan Stubbs had 10 of his 15 points in the third quarter, with several buckets on the inside.

For Oberlin, Ty Locklear, Isaac Thompson, and guard Marian Locklear each had four points, spreading the scoring around for the Phoenix.

Trinity went to the fourth quarter, leading 47-44. Like the first three quarters before, the teams continued to trade baskets. The Trojans led 56-53 with 4:14 to play.

That’s when Oberlin made their move.

Ty Locklear gave the Phoenix the lead with a jumper. After a Trinity miss, Isaac Thompson had a big basket in the paint. He converted the ensuing and-one, and Oberlin led 60-56.

From there, the Phoenix played air-tight defense and converted at the charity stripe to secure the victory.

Oberlin (11-5) hosts Open Door Christian in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night. Senior guard Ty Locklear had 25 points for the Phoenix. Junior forward Isaac Thompson had 15 points, and senior guard Marius Harrell had ten.

Trinity (8-8) travels to Brooklyn Tuesday night to continue CVC Metro play. The Trojans were led by freshman guard Braylyn Irby, who had 16 points. Freshman center Jayquan Stubbs had 15, and junior guard Isaiah King had ten.
