North Olmsted lost a heartbreaker at Rocky River tonight, 17 – 16 on a walk off field goal by the Pirates. The Eagles came in red hot, winners of two straight over Normandy and Lakewood, and an upset over River would put them right back in the thick of things. Sadly for Eagles fans, it didn’t work out and their record drops to 2-5 while the record of the Pirates improves to 6-1.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles drew first blood with 5:52 remaining in the opening half. The score came on a Tommy Horsfall QB keeper from inside the 2 yard line to score. The Pirates wasted no time answering the score with one of their own when Josh Mommers found Ben Borge for a 9 yard touchdown pass. This sent the game to halftime tied at 7.
The game remained tied until midway through the third quarter when Mommers took off for a 14 yard touchdown run, to give the Pirates their first lead of the game at 14-7. The Pirates had a chance to go up double digits at the 8:22 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Eagles blocked their field goal attempt an kept hopes alive.
The hope of the Eagles was warranted soon after when Horsfall hit Michael Passafiume for a 59 yard touchdown strike, to tie the game with 5:59 remaining in regulation, Shortly after that, the Eagles got a safety, and suddenly led 16-14 with 4:56 to go, and a real shot at pulling off the upset.
However, the Pirated had one last drive in them, and put it all together as Stephen Cain hit a 21 yard chip shot field goal to win the game as time ran out on a valiant Eagles effort.
North Olmsted will host Bay on Thursday night while River is set to host Westlake in a couple of Thursday Night former SWC, former GLC, and now CWC clashes!
