Amherst traveled to former conference foe North Olmsted as they entered the day 0-2. North Olmsted was 1-1. Both teams looked to recover from blow out losses the previous week.

North Olmsted put together a solid first drive behind the run game but couldn’t finish in the endzone and settled for a field goal. The 3-0 lead would not last long for the Eagles, as that would be the final points of the quarter due to passing attack struggles.

After being outscored 89-23 in the first two games of the season, the Comets looked to gain some momentum after the defense held and only conceded a field goal.

Amherst exploded out the gates on offense courtesy of Torre Weatherspoon. On the third play of the drive, the star running back took it 70 yards to the house. The Comets first lead of 7-3 sparked an incredible first half for their team.

Weatherspoon would score another touchdown in the first half with a 47-yard rushing touchdown. He even continued to be a thorn in the side of North Olmsted on defense. Quarterback Xavier Balson was rolling to his left and tried to hit his receiver on a comeback route near the far sideline. Weatherspoon read it, jumped the route and ran it back 65 yards. The pick six gave the Comets a commanding 20-3 lead as they began spoiling senior night for the Eagles.

Other than a 33-yard field goal Amherst wouldn’t score the rest of the game and desperately tried to protect the lead defensively. North Olmsted had struggled to find an identity but they would score a 30-yard rushing touchdown with tailback Taedon Beasley (23-10 Comets).

Despite a dominant half for the Comets, the Eagles had another opportunity at the end of the half to pull it within one score. Instead Bolson was intercepted again.

Amherst led North Olmsted 23-10 as we went into the half.

The Eagles needed to come out and find an answer on offense. They found three of them. Beasley, Burgess, and Capps would all split carries in the backfield and would be the fire underneath the Eagles comeback.

The Eagles came out of the locker room with high intensity, picked up a defensive stop and responded with an early score from Capps (23-17 Comets). They would continue to make things hard for the Comets on offense, halting QB Christian Heckmann and company. Weatherspoon also played more as slot receiver in the second half and saw his touches a bit limited.

North Olmsted would eventually take the lead in the third quarter on a Beasley redzone carry (24-23 Eagles). The lead for the Eagles would increase on a strike up the middle from Balson to Eric Wasen for 32 yards. The touchdown made the score 31-23.

Amherst began driving down the field with under two minutes left in the ball game. They were stopped on a fourth down near the redzone with under a minute remaining.

This game was an old school clash and a thriller from start to finish. North Olmsted moves to 2-1 as they get back in the win column. Balson went 9/21 for 68 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Christian Heckmann went 5/16 for 53 yards as he struggled to get anything going for his team through the air. The Comets fall to 0-3 and continue the search for the first win of the season.

The player of the game was on the losing end as Torre Weatherspoon had a career day on offense and defense. He would finish off the day with 254 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns.
