Once again this season, nearly every NFL team had to turn to their backup QB at least once, if not several times over. So who in that bunch showed enough to be a full time starter either on their current team, or perhaps a different roster in 2023?
We went through each team and took notes on who we thought which backups had the best chance to be under center somewhere week one next season.
First, we will start with the AFC
Baltimore Ravens – Tyler Huntley
Huntley only made 112 pass attempts this season in 6 starts, however he showed the kind of poise to win big games. Huntley got them to the playoffs after Lamar Jackson quit on the Ravens, and he even got them within one bad fumble at the goal line, from knocking off the Bengals last week. Huntley has the talent and experience to be a full-time starter in the league.
Miami Dolphins – Skylar Thompson
He played in 7 games this season with the Dolphins as a third string quarterback. He was reliable enough to win a Week 18 game to get them into the playoffs over the Jets. He may not be flashy but there is just something about Thompson that screams competent starter. You may recall, he almost led an impressive comeback off the bench in Week 18 against the Patriots as well.
Cleveland Browns – Jacoby Brissett
While not the most impressive arm or mobility, he knows how to get the job done. Fans can focus on his 4-7 record all they want, but if the Browns recover an onside kick by the Jets, Cade York makes a field goal against the Chargers and they don’t take two plays off against Atlanta, the Browns would have easily been 7-4 with a legit shot at the playoffs by the time Watson returned. Brissett threw for 2608 yards with 12 touchdowns in 11 starts. He is more than serviceable.
Before we go on, I want to make this quick point. While Mitchell Trubisky and Teddy Bridgewater both came into the NFL with a ton of hype and hope, this season pretty much put the finishing touches on their chances of being full time starters in the NFL. They both blew their chances they received this season to try to get back in the conversation with poor efforts.
Possible starters Josh Dobbs, Baliey Zappe and Malik Willis all got time, but none of which jumped off the page to the point that they should be starting full time. I’d pass on all three as of now.
The NFC Selections
Green Bay Packers – Jordan Love
They selected the guy in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft for goodness sake. He is good enough to start and shine. Rodgers is falling fast and playing mind games with GB, it’s time to go to the kid!
San Francisco – Broc Purdy
Umm, do I really need to type anything here? This guy is the real deal! He is more than a system quarterback and has already shown that. Undefeated as a starter with 13 touchdown passes and 1,374 in 9 games, he has been electric! Trey Lance can kiss his job goodbye as there are now two quarterbacks on the roster better than him.
