Newbury, Ohio – It was the final home game for the Newbury Black Knights. And they went out in style.
Senior quarterback Noah Arnold had 25 carries for 130 yards and four touchdowns, propelling the Newbury Black Knights to a 43-16 victory over the visiting Windham Bombers.
The Black Knights got things off and running on their first drive. Noah Arnold handed the ball off to his brother, Evan, and the younger Arnold ran the ball all the way down inside the five, and Noah would punch it in.
Evan Arnold would later pick off a pass from freshman quarterback Wyatt Hanshaw, thwarting a Bomber drive. He would take another end-around handoff from his brother on the ensuing drive, and run the ball all the way inside the five, and his brother did the rest, scoring another touchdown, and adding a two-point conversion to increase the lead to 15-0.
Windham would cut their deficit down to 15-8 when sophomore running back Mikiylen Jones ran it in from five yards out, and converted the ensuing two-point try.
Newbury would add two more scores before the half. First, Evan Arnold would pick off a halfback pass by Mikilylen Jones and take it to the house to increase the lead to 22-8, and Noah Arnold would add his third rushing touchdown before the end of the first half to increase the lead to 29-8 going into halftime.
Arnold would run for one more touchdown, and senior defensive back Monte Myer would return an interception for a touchdown, and senior kicker HannaRose Brastoff would convert the ensuing extra point try for the final points for the home side.
Junior wide receiver Evan Arnold had three rushes for 114 yards and two interceptions (one for a touchdown) to aid the winning effort.
In a losing effort, Windham running back Mikiylen Jones had 18 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore running back Colton Maiorca ran for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
This was the final home game at Newbury High School, due to the school closing down at the end of the year. And it turned out to be a very special occasion, not just for the players and the coaches, but the community as well.
“Newbury is well coached. Obviously it was a good night for them. It’s obviously their last game on this home field and they were amped up and ready to go. They do a great job over there. Not to take away from Newbury, but we are decimated right now and we have a lot of guys out with injuries. We’re missing our best offensive guy, and our best defensive guy. Hats off to Newbury. They earned it and they deserved it.” said Windham second-year head coach Jake Eye.
“Our number one goal tonight was to show everybody how we play football. I’ve been here for four years and we always played tough football, win, lose, or draw. Tonight, we played better than tough, and took it to them early. Everybody got to play and have fun, and we sent the community off in style.” said Newbury head coach Ryan Williams.
And securing the final win on the home field was a memorable way to go out for the Black Knights.
Newbury improves to 6-3 overall and clinches their first winning season since 2016. They travel to Vienna Mathews for their final home game of the regular season.
Windham drops to 2-7 overall. They host Pymatuning Valley to close out the 2019 campaign.
