My career started because I made the excellent choice to write a book called, “HERO” about my days playing and then coaching Little League Baseball. To me, it is one of the most sacred things a child can do growing up.
It teaches you everything from teamwork & discipline, to competitiveness and how to have real fun! Sadly, over the years some leagues have stopped keeping score, and we’ve seen league participation trophies.
This has also caused sign up numbers to plummet all across America. It truly is sad, as when I played and coached there was never a shortage of teams. We’d have 14-16 per age group. Now, leagues are lucky to get 4 per age group.
Monday night in Stanton, Kentucky, a near riot broke out over a T-Ball / Coach pitch game for kids ages 5-7. A controversial call at the plate resulted in both managers storming the field and getting in a near brawl. Making matters worse, was 12 parents also stormed the field threatening violence and exchanging cuss words.
It was a horrible scene that caused the Reds and Rangers Championship game to be cancelled. Haven’t we already cancelled enough culture in this country? Please not baseball too! These kids and coaches both deserve better.
What caused it? How can it be fixed and what needs to be done moving forward to encourage children to keep playing Little League? So quickly the sacrifice these men made to coach was forgotten.
So quickly the short attention span of Americans wanting to scroll through their phone, refused to get the full story and were quick to cast blame. That’s not right, and at Kee On Sports we want to provide our readers and listeners with the full story.
We spoke with Shannon Rose, who’s son plays for the Rangers about what really happened, and the true character of Rangers Manager Jimmy Smith and Reds Manager and League Vice President Steve Randall.
