NCAA Tournament Division III Womens: Yellow Jackets Sting Haverford

Berea, OH- All game long you could hear the Baldwin Wallace bench scream “D It Up”. It was heard loud and clear! The Yellow Jackets had very little trouble, if any at all, stamping their ticket to the second round with a dominant 67-42 victory over the visiting Haverford Fords tonight. They advanced and will now play Chicago who won their matchup with LaRoche 80-57 earlier in the night.

The game was never close as the Yellow Jackets led big from start to finish thanks to stifling defense that would not allow the Fords to get an open look. Haverford was held to a paltry 13 of 45 shooting on the night. This was also reflected in the 0 for 9 from beyond the arc as well. Perhaps the most impressive was the 10 steals in which BW swiped.

The Yellow Jackets spread the ball around all night and made sure everyone got a look. This team is truly 12 deep as shown tonight. No less than 9 Yellow Jackets scored. They also passed it around well, tallying up a total of 9 assists.

Long range wasn’t a problem either, as they nailed 6 of them. There wasn’t many but they took advantage of hitting the free ones as well, going 7 for 9 from the charity stripe. They looked well rounded in all area’s and will give the Maroons all they can handle tomorrow night.

Leading BW in scoring was Riley Schill with 14 points and 3 rebounds. Lilly Edwards also came up big with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Leading the way on defense was Hannah Fecht with 3 steals.

Pacing the Fords was Megan Furch with 16 points and Anna – Sophia Capizzi with 11 points. One bright spot was the Fords display of excellent foul shooting, as they went 16 of 17 from the line. Those were 16 huge points as they only had 26 points from the field.

It was an impressive first half that saw BW build a 37-12 lead. The Haverford Fords simply couldn’t get a shot off against smothering Yellow Jacket defense. The Yellow Jackets stung the Fords to just 5 of 21 shooting in the half. The Yellow Jackets had built a commanding 22-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

What makes the BW first half performance even more impressive is how much they spread the ball around on offense. Eight different players scored for BW in the half, in a total display of team effort and dominance. Leading them was Riley Schill with 9 and Kasey Hughes 7. The two also combined to go 6 of 9 shooting in the half as well.

Tomorrow night’s second round game against Chicago is 6pm.
