How ironic is it that Jet’s defensive coordinator Gregg Williams takes a sick pride in hurting players to the point where their careers are put in jeopardy, and tonight, it was his teams QB violently knocked from the game by Myles Garrett ending what little chance the Jets had in this one?
The Browns didn’t look great by any stretch, 9 more penalties for 85 yards and sloppy play at times, but all that aside, they will happily take the 23-3 victory and move forward with their season.
As mentioned, the Browns and Garrett knocked Jet’s starting quarterback Trevor Siemian from the game in the second quarter with several violent hits. Garrett was a game changer tonight with 3 sacks and took residence in the Jets backfield all evening.
Simian wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire to that point, only tossing for 3 yards on 3 of 6 passing, getting sacked twice. His replacement Luke Faulk went 20 for 25 for 198 yards but never really led a touchdown threatening drive.
The only threat the Jets had left was LeVeon Bell, who was held in check by a hungry Browns D-line. Bell was throttled and held to 68 yards on 21 carries. He did have 61 yards on 10 catches as well, but the Browns defensive held him check and kept him from changing the game.
The Browns defense was the story of the night in many ways. Keeping pressure on the quarterbacks all night long and holding New York to only 262 total yards. The Browns also held the Jets to 2 of 12 on third down. Keeping the Browns defense fresh and ready to go.
On the fun side of the ball, the Browns finally gave fans what they have been thirsting for since they traded for Odell Beckham Jr last spring.
OBJ went off for 161 yards on 6 catches, including an 89 yard catch and run from Baker Mayfield at the tail end of the third quarter to put the game away. That touchdown was the only points scored in a clunky second half.
For Baker, it was part of a 325-yard night that saw him get sacked and picked off once. His touchdown pass to OBJ was his only one of the night, and one of only two touchdowns scored during the entire game.
The other touchdown was scored by Nick Chubb at the 10:16 mark of the second. Chubb burst through a Jets blitz to score from 19 yards out and extend the Browns lead to 13-0. For Chubb, it was part of a 62 rushing yard night, along with 4 catches for 36 yards.
The Jets would cut into the 13-0 lead with a field goal mid-way through the second quarter by Sam Ficken. If you didn’t know who Sam Ficken was before the game started, the announcers spent a good 15 minutes telling you all about him as if he was the second coming of Morten Anderson.
Tonight’s broadcast was awful and Browns fans were lucky to have greats like Tony Romo and Jim Nance last week. ESPN needs to reevaluate that crew right away and make some switches quickly.
The Browns would tack on three more in the closing moments of the half, as Austin Seibert would convert a field goal from 43 yards to make it 16-3 at the half. Siebert had a good night, converting 3 of 3 in the field goal game, making them from 23, 48 and 43 yards.
The Browns will look to improve to 2-1 next week as they host the defending NFC Champion LA Rams. The Jets will look for their first win of the season in hostile territory as they travel to New England.
