Fresh off the announcement that there will be a “Happy Gilmore Sequel”, I have decided to dedicate a weekly article to one of my favorite scenes in the iconic movie. If you recall, when Happy is trying to play better on the course and stay focused, Chubbs reminds him to go to his, “Happy Place”. For Gilmore, this created a fantasy of of a midget riding a toy pony and his grandma winning the jackpot on a slot machine, amongst several other images. It’s an iconic scene from a fantastic movie.
So, all of this got me thinking about some of my “Happy Places”. One of which involves my seven year old daughter Madelyn Rose. For those of you who have met her, you already understand the cuteness factor she brings into play, but also, her overall tininess which makes her so easy and fun to snuggle. In fact, I’ve been snuggling with my “Zook”, since she was days old. I’ll never forget when she was six days old and I came home late at night from covering a High School Football game at Bay Village, and my wife Emily desperately needed sleep, so I volunteered to snuggle the new baby, give her a bottle and put her to sleep. It resulted in an all night snuggle in the chair as we watched various ESPN 30 for 30’s together, and Friday Night Touchdown of course!
From that moment on, I was hooked on snuggles with my sweet little Madelyn Rose. It doesn’t matter if it is a Daddy Daughter snuggle fest watching a Disney movie, or an afternoon reading session in the recliner, listening to her reading skills get better and better, every time I get to snuggle with Madelyn Rose it takes me to my “Happy Place”. All the cares of the world melt away, and it is one of those very few moments I get to sit back, smile and just relax.
While some of these articles in this new column will feature sports, food and other forms of entertainment, I found there was no better place to start then then with an article on my Zook!
