Two familiar rivals battled in Girls Varsity Basketball on Wednesday night in the Avon Eagles Gymnasium. The Avon Lady Eagles were hosting the Midview Middies in a hard fought, heart and soul battle between two really strong teams,
A couple of players established themselves early in the game. For the home team Eagles it was Senior Abby Liber, Forward/ Post player, who had a basket and an And One on a dribble drive late in the first quarter.
For the Midview Middies it was 6-4 Junior Center Mary Meng. She’s tall and athletic and can dominate the game at times. The other Middie player was Sophomore sensation Olivia DiFranco.
A star player in the making is this young dynamic player. DiFranco hit two 3 pointers in the quarter which was just the beginning of her amazing night. Meng had four points in the first quarter using her 6-4 size to full advantage.
Both teams were very good, and it was an aggressive style of play from both squads all night. The game was controlled by the Middies in the first half because of great passing and ball movement.
Avon’s biggest problem was great looks and shot selection, but they couldn’t sink many shots. The Lady Eagles were 8 for 33 shooting in the first half for a paltry 24 % shooting. The score at half time was Midview 29, Avon 18.
In the 3rd quarter the Eagles had a nice comeback by shooting much better, and Liber had a bucket and 4 points from the line. Senior Guard Ryann Clapham had a nice third quarter with 3 nice midrange jump shots for a 6 point quarter.
For the Midview squad Meng had 4 points, and DiFranco had 5 in the quarter. Avon outscored Midview 18 to 11 in the third making the score Midview 38, Avon 36 at the quarter’s end.
The story of the 4th quarter and of the game was Olivia DiFranco. She is listed as a Forward at 5-9, so she has some size. Her ball handling skills and quickness were too much for any player on Avon’s team.
In the quarter she hit for three field goals and one from 3-point range. The fortitude and fearless player willingly took the ball at the end of the game to hit 6 straight free throws, and ice the game down the stretch.
The Sophomore had a stunning 16 points for the fourth quarter, and an incredible 33 points for the game. Midview’s Mary Meng’s contribution in the first half was points, and size. In the second half her inside presence, and shot blocking, and rebounds was an incredible contribution.
Both teams have heart and very good players, but the night belonged to Midview and Olivia DiFranco. The final score was Midview 57, Avon 49.
