Medina Highland defeats Woodridge, 6-1

Kent, Ohio – Tyler Haney threw a complete game Saturday afternoon, propelling Medina Highland to a 6-1 victory over Woodridge in the second game of the David Starkey Memorial Classic.

Neither team scored in the first two innings, but Medina Highland made their move in the bottom of the third with two outs.

After two runners reached base, due to a walk and a single, junior infielder Derek Evans laced a two-run single to right field in the bottom of the third to put the Hornets on top, 2-0. Ethan Smith added an RBI double to left field to make the score 3-0.

Jacob Burr scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-0.

Woodridge got their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth on a two-out single to left field by senior pitcher Ashton Nesbitt. Highland responded with a run in their half, thanks to a Jimmy Dejonghe infield single, for the final margin.

Senior pitcher Tyler Haney threw a complete game Saturday afternoon on just 74 pitches to improve to 5-0 on the year.

“Tyler (Haney) just did what he does. That’s his fourth complete game of the season. As we’re coming down the stretch and building momentum, any win is a good win.” said Medina Highland head coach Jay Grissom.

Medina Highland improved to 16-4 overall. They host Aurora Monday afternoon to continue Suburban League play.

“Our kids played solid ball today and made the plays they were supposed to make.” said Woodridge head coach Dennis Dever. “We want to keep playing good teams heading into the tournament, and hopefully, we can get on a roll here.” he added.

Woodridge dropped to 2-16 overall.
