BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio – Any concerns that may have been about a hangover effect for the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Lady Bees were quickly put to rest Thursday night in a convincing win. Just 24 hour after seeing their eight-game winning streak snapped in a tough loss to Copley, the (11-3) Lady Bees unleashed their potent offense, storming back in a dominate effort to knock Westlake.
Head Coach Bill Ready’s team came out firing, jumping to a 2-0 lead with less than six minutes in the first period. Their first goal came less than two minutes into the game, as sophomore Megan Klima dodged two defenders for a easy goal. Junior McKenna Cooney followed up with a goal of her own a few moments later to silence to small crowd in attendance. After one quarter, it looked like the Lady Demons were well positioned to catch the Bees vulnerable after the Copley loss Wednesday.
But Brecksville, a team often known for its second-half adjustments, decided not to wait. The flipped the switch late in the first late in the first half, scoring four unanswered goals in the final 3:56 before the break. Senior attacker Mallory McCodden netted two goals during the much crucial stretch, including the most historic one – her 200th career varsity point.
“We were having a rough start, but we were talking as a team, and we came together collectively to focus on our skills versus scoring and it just worked out, ” McCrodden said after the game.
It certainly paid dividends. McCrodden finished with a hat trick, but the scoring was widespread throughout the team. Senior midfielder Kattie Delahunty led the charge with a game-high four goals, while sophomore midfielder Kayla Collard matched McCrodden with a hat trick of her own. The trop of Delahunty, Collardm and McCrodden accounted for 10 of the team’s 14 total goals. Sophomore Cat Gutridge chipped in with two goals of her own.
The offensive depth is no surprise to Head Coach Jaime Robatin.
“We’re pretty consistent in terms of scoring,” Robatin stated postgame. “We have 5, 6, 7 girls who can score. Once we started to dominate the draws, our possessions and rhythm picked up and everything worked for us from there. When we started to move off the ball, we started to get thing going.”
