The Magnificat Blue Streaks used strong defense to cause five, 5 second violations in route to a 63-25 victory over the visiting Lorain Titans tonight to advance to the next round of the tournament. They shot the ball well and spread around the scoring as 10 different Blue Streaks had points.

Julia Hall had 11 points with all of them coming in the first half. Coach Danny Gallagher touched on just how much the Sophomore helps with this team, “She is great and tough as nails as she does a lot of incredible things on defense, and is a huge weapon on offense.  Her length bothers so many people on the defensive side of the ball and her versatility helps on the offense side.  She is able to play inside and outside and is a great kid.”

Brynn Roggenburk had 10 and Sofia Wilson had 12, while Katie Maryo had 9 and Elizabeth Spicer drained two from long range in the fourth, to finish with 6 points.  Also scoring for the Blue Streaks was Isamaris Tejeda-Medina with 4 and Grace Thomas with 3 while Gemma Wichman had Abigail Rosol had 2 each.  Reese Roggenburk finished the scoring with a point.

Leading the way for Lorain was Dalasha Pruchinsky with 7 points, including 5 of 6 from the foul line. The dynamic Samone Whitt who is a state leader in shot putt, also showed some serious basketball skills tonight as she scored 6 points.  Jaisa Morales had 3 while Jelynn Carrington had 2 and Ja’Neja-Riley had 4.  Rounding out the scoring for Lorain was Nakeya Hermon with a point.

The Blue Streaks jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game.  The scoring came thanks in part to some nice breakaway buckets, provided by sharp defense and speed getting down the court.  Coach Gallagher touched on that as well, “It’s something we work on a lot, we try to get out and get the easiest basket we can to start a possession, and then we want to get the best basket we can.  We did that today.”

The Titans didn’t score their first points until they were down 9-0, and only 3:40 remained in the quarter.  They used the spark to cut the lead to 14-7 at one point with a Morales three ball, before a Julia Hall brought it back to double digits at 17-7.  The Titans answered quickly and cut the lead to 17-11 after one quarter.

The second quarter was all Blue Streaks as they outscored the Titans 17-0 in the frame, to take a commanding 34-11 lead into the break.  In the quarter, they started with back-to-back threes from Hall and Roggenburk, before 4 straight from Wilson.  Sophia Wilson would finish with 6 in the quarter.  Coach Gallagher discussed why they were able to shut out the Titans in the second, “We try to hold to teams to less than 10 a quarter for less than 40 in a game, we gave up a 11 in the first quarter and had to play a point behind of that pace, so we talked about that at the end of the first quarter and I’m happy we responded that way, because it is hard to do. “

The Blue Streaks exploded from long range in the third as they sunk 5 from deep, with Katie Maryo and Sofia Wilson each hitting twice.  The other deep ball came from Grace Thomas as the Blue Streaks built a dominant 52-30 lead that put the game away.

The Blue Streaks will now play Tuesday night in Medina against the winner of the North Ridgeville versus Wooster game.
