CANTON, OH – The Marion Local Flyers won their 64th consecutive game this morning over Hillsdale 74-0. This is their fourth consecutive OHSAA Division VII State Championship victory as they put up an impressive 11 touchdown performance. They scored running the ball, returning the ball, passing the ball and intercepting the ball. They did it all in the win! The Flyer defense was every bit impressive as they picked off Lewis 5 times and only allowed the Falcons to cross the 50-yard line once.
The Flyers wasted no time getting on the board with back-to-back touchdown drives to start the game. Both drives were strictly on the ground and cashed in by tailback Parker Hess. The first rushing touchdown was from 4 yards out and the second was from 3 yards out. Altogether, it only took 8 total plays and less then 2 minutes off the clock as the Flyers worked fast.
Things went from bad to worse for Hillsdale after a Flyer punt return allowed them to start their third drive from the Falcons 37-yard line. This time, it only took the Flyers one play to score as they had a Hoelscher touchdown reception from a Knouff pass to go up 20-0, still in the first quarter.
Moments later, the Flyers picked off a Lewis pass for the second time in the quarter and took it all the way back to the one-yard line. One play later it was Ethan Heitkamp taking it in to extend the Flyers lead to 26-0 with 3:19 to play. They weren’t done yet as about two minutes later, it was Victor Hoelscher returning a Falcon punt 66 yards to the house. This made it 33-0, and we were still in the first quarter.
The second quarter didn’t start much better for Hillsdale as Marion Local took their opening drive 66 yards on 5 plays before scoring on a 1-yard Parker Hess touchdown run. This put the game away 40-0 with 8:19 still to go in the second quarter.
The Flyers still needed a pick six to fill out their bingo card and got one on the next Falcon drive when Griffin Bruns picked off the Lewis pass and took it 45 yards to score. This defensive strike extended the Flyer lead to 46-0 with over 7 minutes left to play in the second quarter.
They weren’t done, as Knouff took their next play from scrimmage for a 60-yard quarterback draw to score, improving the lead to 53-0. Shortly after, another Flyer interception led to another Parker Hess touchdown and a 60-0 Flyer lead with 2:20 remaining in the second quarter. The score remained 60-0 as we headed to halftime.
The second half was more of the same as Marion Local went on to win 74-0.
