Magnificat hosted Saint Joseph in what many refer to as the “Holy War” of Woman’s basketball here in NE Ohio. Magnificat bested their rivals 61 to 23 in dominating fashion, The Blue Streaks were led by the “Magnificent three from Magnificat” which consisted of Julia Hall, Sofia Wilson, and Reese Roggenburk who combined for a total of over half of their teams’ total points.
The Magnificat win was a team effort, each member of the squad earned hustle points and did their part to separate themselves from their archrivals. Team defense was also a key factor to the Blue Streaks success, only allowing 16 points in three quarters of play was a true display of dominance and defensive discipline that is rare to see in any level of basketball.
Saint Joseph was shot out of a cannon as they earned themselves a with a quick three from Bree White and a two-point bucket from Mya White. Little did the Jaguars know that those would be the last points they would score in the first quarter as the Blue Streaks took absolute control of the game.
Saint Joseph used off ball screens and actions to free up space under the basket, The Streaks smothered the paint which forced Saint Josephs to settle for threes in which they were not converting on. This continued while the Magnificent three from Magnificat in Hall, Wilson, and Roggenburk dominated the first half.
While a crew of Streaks contributed to the teams first quarter lead of 14 to 5, the Magnificent three controlled the boards, distributed the ball evenly, and lead their team in points. Magnificat gave up just 11 points in the first half to their 36 points. The Blue Streaks went into the half with a healthy lead, that healthy lead only increased in the second half.
The Streaks spread out their attack in the second half while keeping the theme of tough defense that refuses to give Saint Josephs any chances inside the paint. The third quarter saw the Jaguars only score five points. The Blue Streaks maintained the group subs from the first half while their star players opened up chances for the rest of the team.
