Magnificat Shines On Senior Night With Victory Over Padua

The Magnificat Blue Streaks brought home a 74-38 win over Padua on Senior Night.  Six of the 7 seniors of Magnificat scored in a total team effort tonight. They were led by Julia Hall with 25, Reese Roggenburk with 13 and Sofia Wilson with 11.

Other seniors scoring were Abigail Norman with 5 while Charlotte Pap had 6 and Sophia LaPorte had 3.  Capping the scoring for the Blue Streaks were non seniors Gemma Wichmann with 4 while Izzy Wilson and Lily Kulhman each had 2. Also scoring 2 was Erin Rosfelder and Elsa LaPorte.

The Bruins were led by Darlene Jaidah and Izzy Lapp who had 9 each while Ella Figliano and Annabelle Shuman each finished with 7.  The Bruins were playing without the dynamic Sophie Spade who was injured in a recent game versus Saint Joe’s.

As mentioned, Julia Hall led all scorers with 25 while dominating the paint all night.  She spoke to us afterwards about the importance of Senior night and her ability to score in the paint, “It was really special tonight as our underclassmen did a great job!  I’m so grateful to be a part of this program and here today as the last 4 years has been an amazing experience.  I feel like in practice we push each other very hard and not take it personal so we keep getting stronger.”

Hall was 12 of 14 from the line tonight and spoke about the importance of that as well, “Foul shots are very crucial so we practice them a lot in practice.  We atleast do 24 everyday at practice. “

The game started out tight as 4 points combined from Lapp and Figliano sparked the Bruins out to a quick 4-2 start before a 9-0 run led by Hall and Roggenburk spotted the Blue Streaks a 11-4 lead minutes in before it was stopped on a shot from Ally Ornas for Padua.  The quarter went back and forth from there but the Blue Streaks led by 6 at 18-12 when it was over.

The Bruins got a quick 3 from Ashley Rypiak early into the second but it was quickly answered by Sofia Wilson.  From there, it was all Magnificat as a 13-2 run put the game out of reach by halftime as the Blue Streaks led 36-17.

The second half began with Charlotte Pap nailing back to back three’s on her big night.  This was the start of a dominant second half that saw the Blue Streaks cruise to the 74-38 win.

I have a couple of takeaways from tonight’s game

  1. Izzy Lapp is going to be a player to watch out for as she gets older and bigger. Right now she is a very skinny freshman with a ton of talent and heart.  Just wait until she starts hitting the gym with the likes of Spade and Darlene Jaidah and this team can become very dangerous.
  2. Padua, for a young team, can handle the press very well. They are careful with the ball and do not allow a ton of fast breaks on them and don’t crack under the pressure either.
  3. When Julia Hall of Magnificat finds room in the paint, watch out!
  4. How about that Gemma? She never hesitates coming off the bench if it means something to someone else.  She did it last year with class and even tonight as she had no problems giving up her starting spot and minutes for seniors to see extended action and never complained.  In fact, she was the first one to stand up and cheer them on.  Everyone should have a teammate like Gemma!
