ROCKY RIVER, OH –  A defensive battle tonight resulted in a Senior Night win for Magnificat over a very talented Gilmour team, 38-27.  The Lancers outscored the Blue Streaks in the first, played them even in the second and fourth, but suffered a rough third quarter which proved to be the difference.

Senior Gemma Wichmann balled out on senior night with 15 points to lead all scorers.  Elle Lakios had a hot hand in moments as she closed out with 8 points.  Elise Laporte scored all 7 of her points in the third, but that what was pulled the game out for the Blue Streaks.  Lizzie Godlewski scored 4 while Izzy Wilson and Eva Rivera each finished with 2.

The Lancers were led by the exciting freshman Annie Sullivan with 9 while Morgan Pfundstein scored 8.  Amaya Domanski tallied 6 while Erin Rossoll finished with 3 and Brooke Leedy 1.

The Lancers came out with three balls from Rossell & Sullivan to jump out to a 6-2 lead. The Blue Streaks were ice cold from the floor to start the game and didn’t score their first points until a Lakios 3 with 4:15 left in the first quarter.  After the Lancer bumped their lead to 10-5 it was a Wichmann three ball that sent the Blue Streaks to the quarter break trailing 10-8.

A seal remained on the Blue Streak basket in the second as the Lancers slowly increased their lead to 15 – 8 before Lakios finally drained one from deep and closed it to 15-11.  The game went to half with the Lancers up 15-13.

The third quarter was all Blue Streaks as they went out and dominated for 8 straight minutes, outscoring the Lancers 17-4 in the frame to build a 30-19 lead after three.  The quarter belonged to Elise Laporte who gave the Blue Streaks their first lead at 18-15 with a three ball, followed by a breakout layup to increase the advantage to 20-15 with 5:57 to play in the third.  At one point, the run got up to 11-0 in the first four minutes of the quarter.  The first Lancer bucket didn’t come until only 3:34 was left in the quarter from the hands of Morgan Pfundstein.

The Lancers got four straight points from their remarkable freshman Annie Sullivan to open the fourth and cut the lead to 30-23.  From there the game went back and forth until Magnificat pulled away for the 38-27 victory as Wichmann scored 6 in the 4th to seal it.
