Magnificat Earns Road Win at Westlake 62-28

WESTLAKE, OH –  The Magnificat Blue Streaks appear to be the real deal this season as they take on the top talent in the area with an intense focus on defense and relentless attacking of the lane. They showed that intensity tonight with a commanding road 62-28 victory at a very solid opponent in Westlake.  This was a big test for the Blue Streaks, and they passed with flying colors, leading pillar to post.

The Blue Streaks used a commanding defense and face paced attack to build an early lead and then spend the rest of the game tacking on to it. 3 minutes into the second quarter, the Blue Streaks led 22-10 and were on the hunt for more.  They used a Brynn Roggenburk full court run out of a Demon miss to extend the lead to 24-10.  A few moments later, the Demons got a bit of hope as Laura Stanton drained a three from the corner and cut the lead to 24-13.  Sadly, for the Demons, it was the closest they would come in the first half as the Blue Streaks began to pull away from there.

The Blue Streak defense held the Lady Demons scoreless the remainder of the first half as they scored the last 9 points of the quarter to take a commanding 33-13 halftime lead.  Those 9 points came courtesy of inside bucket in the lane from Reese Roggenburk, A Katie Maryo free throw, a runner high off the glass by Maryo, fouls shots from Julia Hall and a beautiful drive to the lane by Wilson to hand the Blue Streaks the lead at the break.

Down 20 to start the second half, the Demons were in desperate need of a spark and got one when Jacia Onunwor hit a three pointer from nearly midcourt, to cut the lead down to 33-16.  From there however, it was once again all Blue Streaks as Hall got them cooking with a powerful move to the lane that found the bottom of the net. This was the start of a 4-0 Blue Streak run that saw them extend their lead to 37-16, until Onuwor hit another three ball against her former teammates. Moments later after a questionable call handed the ball back to the Demons, they capitalized with a great layup from Ella Stanton to cut the lead to 37-19 and once again given Demon nation some hope.

Magnificat was unfazed and went on a 12-0 run to finish the quarter up 49-21.  The big blows coming from made foul shots by Gemma Wichman and Brynn Roggenburk along with 4 more points from Reese Roggenburk and a deep ball from Katie Maryo.

The Blue Streaks went on to cruise from there for a 62-28 victory. Westlake is set to host Rocky River on Saturday while the Blue Streaks travel to Copley on December 22nd, just in time for Santa Claus.
