Magnificat Defeats Rival St. Joseph 44-30

Rocky River, OH- Girls’ basketball has been as competitive as ever in Northeast Ohio. There is no better example of this than two of the top private schools in the area, the Magnificat Blue Streaks (3-2) and the St. Joseph Jaguars (2-2). These two have a history of close games; unfortunately for the Jaguars, they have struggled against their rivals the past few seasons.

Magnificat has been arms-length away from the state title in 2024 and 2025, falling in the final four. This season, the Blue Streaks look to make another run in the playoffs with hopes of winning the state Championship.

St. Joseph is no stranger to the playoffs, as they have been regular visitors despite their recent struggles against their rivals over the past few seasons.

Magnificat defeated St. Joseph to a score of 44-30. The Blue Streaks jump ahead to a quick nine-to-one run; their mix of defensive schemes and dynamic offense proved to be too much for the up-and-coming Jaguars.

Both teams had a tough time making shots early despite getting clean looks at the basket. Magnificat found their way to the basket but struggled to finish shots due to the strong help defense from the St. Joseph defenders.

The Jaguars, on the other hand, struggled with the press by the Blue Streaks. They had open shots beyond the three-point line, but failed to capitalize early on. When finding cutters down the lane, they would earn chances at the free-throw line but failed at making those chances, similar to their attempts behind the arc.

The second quarter saw the Jaguars finish more chances but continue to struggle at the charity stripe, while the Magnificat offense slowed down as they struggled to find more scoring options early in the game outside of Senior Gemma Wichmann.

Wichmann was a matchup nightmare for the Jaguars as her physical play and elite handling skills proved to be a true point forward. Later in the game, she found herself in foul trouble as they had to limit her minutes.

Magnificat held a 10-point lead going into the half as they limited quality chances from the Jaguars.

The third quarter carried the same theme as the first half, as the Blue Streaks maintained a 10-point lead throughout the quarter. A big bucket from St. Joseph would then lead to a four-point swing in favor of Magnificat.

These patterns continued throughout the quarter and into the fourth. The Jaguars thought they obtained the momentum when Magnificat coach Danny Gallagher received a technical foul. Sophomore Lily Sanfilippo hit both free throws as she had a solid outing, leading her team in points.

This moment wasn’t enough for the Jags; the Blue Streaks mixed defenses up all game, switching from a full-court press, a 1-3-1 zone, and a half-court press that caught Jaguar defenders right at the half-court line.

Slowly, the lead became too much for the Jaguars to overcome as they stood tough against a talented Mags team that controlled the game from start to finish.

Wichmann was the leading scorer for the victorious Blue Steaks with 11 points, and Sanfilippo had 14 points in the loss despite her impressive performance.
