BEREA,OH – The Blue Streaks used smothering defense and the smoldering hot shooting of Elle Lakios to defeat Medina 49-25 in the final game of a wonderful Cleveland Basketball Classic at BW this weekend. The Blue Streak defense never allowed more then 9 in a quarter.
Lakios led all scorers with 16 points and was 4 of 6 from long range. Gemma Wichmann wasn’t far behind with 15 of her own to help pace the Blue Streaks. Izzy Wilson buried 2 from downtown for 6 points while Eva Rivera had 5. Elise Laporte, Lizzie Godlewski and Ella Hummer each had 2 while Lily Kuhlman had 1.
Abby Dress and Molly Gilbert each had 6 to lead the Bees in scoring. Kinley Miller and Addy Shook each had 4 while Haylie Purdue and Bri Kudley each had 2. Finishing the scoring for the Bees was Gillian Kurka with 1.
The Blue Streaks came out hot with back to back buckets by Lakios and Wichmann to get them cooking. Already up 4, Lakios nailed a three from the corner to extend the lead to 7-0 on their next trip down the court. Godlewski had a nice spin move to the bucket on their next trip down the court, and just like that it was 9-0 Blue Streaks with 4:54 still to play in the first quarter. Lakios wasn’t done yet as she hit another three from the corner to make it 12-0 Blue Streaks at 4:34 mark. The scoring pace slowed from there as Magnificat led 18-4 after one.
As she did to start the first, Lakios did again to start the second by hitting a three ball to get the scoreboard moving. This latest bucket by Lakios put the Blue Streaks up 21-4 as the Bees couldn’t seem to find the bottom of the net with any regularity. Gemma Wichmann followed with a perfectly formed three ball to increase the lead to 24-4 with 5:02 to play. A bit later, after an Abby Dress bucket cut it to 26-6, another Lakios three ball increased it back up to 29-6 with 3:19 left in the half. The Blue Streaks took a 31-10 lead into the break.
Abby Dress followed a Izzy Wilson 3 with a bucket of her own to start the second half. A hustle play by Lakios followed to keep the Blue Streaks in firm control. Overall it was a pretty methodical quarter as the Blue Streaks maintained a 41-19 lead after three.
Izzy Wilson followed a Perdue bucket for Medina with a three ball for the Blue Streaks to open the scoring in the fourth. A Gemma Wichmann “and one” put it away for good at 46-21 with 5:14 to play, as the Blue Streaks cruised to the 49-25 victory.
