It was game three of the Sunday edition of this years Cleveland Basketball Classic that saw Magnificat defeat Laurel 53-39. The Blue Streaks were led by Seniors Reese Roggenburk with 15 and Julia Hall with 14. Fellow Senior Sofia Wilson, had 12 in the effort. Gemma Wichmann was a force inside with 7 while Charlotte Pap had 3 and Izzy Wilson 2.
For Laurel, they were led by Jordyn Meyer with 12 and Tristan Williams with 15.
Down 6-2 early, the Blue Streaks put together a 10-0 run on the back of Julia Hall, Sofia Wilson, Gemma Wichman and Charlotte Pap who all had big buckets during that stretch, to hand Magnificat a 12-6 lead before a Tristian Williams layup for the Gators stopped the run. A Wilson three from the corner ran it back out to 15-8 Blue Streaks and that is where the quarter ended.
A Jordan Meyer three early into the second, cut it to a 4-point game, before Julia Hall answered and brought it back out to 7 at 20-13 with 5:51 to play in the first half. Seconds later, another Meyer three ball made it 20-16. Back-to-back buckets by Reese Roggenburk, increased the Blue Streak lead to 24-16. From there, baskets by Wilson and Hall increased it to 28-16 with two minutes to play. The Blue Streaks held a 32-20 lead at the break.
Four quick points by Tristan Williams to start the second half, gave the Gators a quick spark before a three-point play from Sophia Wilson put it out. The third quarter was slow with not much scoring and ended with the Blue Streaks up 40-27.
The fourth quarter went back and forth for a bit, before the Blue Streaks came away with the 53-39 victory.
I spoke with Reese Roggenburk about her ability to close out games as she did yet again tonight with a big fourth quarter, “Having energy throughout the whole game is important. Just staying in the game and staying focused to bring home a win.” said Roggenburk.
I spoke with Gemma Wichmann about her ability to be physical inside when needed, “Growing up I’ve always had friends and teammates push me and I have always had to play at the older bigger level. That is my role on the team to be the bully down low”, said Gemma.
I spoke with Julia Hall and Sofia Wilson on the excitement coming into this season, “We know we’re going to get everyone’s best game, so it is exciting. We come into the game with a mindset and we have to play our hardest and stick to our values”, said Wilson. Hall added, “we have to really focus on sticking to our values and playing together as a team without dipping in the third or fourth quarter. “
