“Put your heart, mind and soul into everything you do, even the smallest acts and that is the secret to success.”
ROCKY RIVER, OH – Heart and Soul, every great team has one, that one player who defines the core values of the squad and personifies the heart it took to get there. Time and time again this season I would ask a random person who came up to me in which I knew didn’t have a daughter on the team and I would ask, “who are you here to see play?”, every single time the answer was the same, Sofia Wilson.
Watch her play for 5 minutes, and it is easy to see why. This young lady is all heart and perhaps the most unselfish player I have ever watched play. She could easily score 20-25 points a game, but instead, she passes first, almost every single time. This was proven when she hit 300 career assists earlier this season.
Not only is she great with her down court vision and quick passing skills, but she plays lights out defense and can scorch the nets from long distance and is also the queen of the running jump shot. Wilson is flat out deadly no matter where she touches the ball and what she decides to do with it.
One of the greatest traits you can have as a player and a person is the talent of being “unselfish” or “selfless”. No matter how you choose to say it, Wilson has both! She is always playing with a smile despite what the score or situation may be as you can tell she truly enjoys playing the game.
There’s times in the game where I’m so consumed in getting the stats right, and my notes correct that I lose sight of the beautiful play at times in front of me. I recently just put down the pencil during a 5 minute stretch of the Magnificat vs Fremont Ross game and let my top assistant Maggie take stats while I just watched for the spirit of the game, within seconds I was captured by the play of Wilson. She hustles nonstop on both ends of the court and is constantly that fire plug keeping them going. She truly was a joy to watch and it opened up my eyes once again to just how special she is.
It is with great honor and privilege that we name Sofia Wilson as the receipt of 2025 Heart & Soul Award Winner.
I spoke with her Head Coach Danny Gallagher who this to share about what makes her perfect for this award, ” This is a perfect award for Fia to receive because that is what she is to our team. It amazes us after every game when we look at our stats to see all of the different things she does for us. Points, assists, rebounds, steals, deflections. On top of this she has to control the game for us. With the schedule we have played she does not get a night off and has had it harder than any other PG in Ohio. Fia has handled all of this responsibility with an incredible attitude. She is a kid you want to be around every day and we are so thankful to her for everything she has done for our program. “
