Magnificat Blue Streak Gemma Wichmann Wins Warrior of the Year

Gemma Wichmann may be the most athletic student athlete I have ever covered, in any sport, at any level.  You get the feeling she would excel at any sport she tried as she is a natural born athlete.   I have often said that if reporters didn’t get in for a free, I’d have a short list of players I would pay good money to watch play, Gemma Wichmann of Magnificat is on the very top of that list.  She has an infectious style of play that you fall in love watching after only a few minutes.  She is the picture of the words aggression, hustle and heart. There is not a loose ball Wichmann wont dive for and not a rebound she won’t body up to get, no matter the odds.

Wichmann will take the ball anywhere on the court and drive with it, she is fearless and isn’t intimidated of anyone covering her.  She can come straight at you, or back into you, either way she is a force that is tough to stop.  Wichmann is the kind of  “meat and potatoes ” player every team needs.  That one girl with a warrior spirit who isn’t afraid to get dirty in order to get the job done.  I’ll repeat it, she is the teammate you want to have!

Nothing comes easy when Wichmann is on the court on the other side of you.  I’ll say it again, she is the girl you want on your side when you go to battle, every day of the week and twice on Sunday! She has a little over one season left on Varsity, do yourself a favor and carve out a time to watch her play, you won’t regret it!

Making what she does even more impressive is that Magnificat doesn’t play in a conference.  Rather, they routinely have one of the toughest schedules in the state, if not the country.  This is why I  have her listed as “Independent” because a conference cannot claim her.  Like her teammates Julia Hall and Reese Roggenburk, she could step into the CWC and the SWC and compete to win Player of the Year.  That’s not the case though as they do not have a conference but rather play everyone from Medina and Brush to Notre Dame and Mount Verde. They do not shy away from competition.  She plays against the very best and still excels.

In a prior interview her Head Coach Danny Gallagher described her as, “Gemma may be the most well-rounded young woman I have ever coached.  She is mature beyond her years.  She is involved in so many parts of our school.  All of the incredible plays she makes on the court happen because she is selfless.  She works so hard for her teammates and the betterment of the team.  The best thing about Gemma is she still finds time to have fun and joke with her teammates.  We are incredibly proud of Gemma!

I’d have to agree with Coach on that one,  When I think about how to describe Gemma, the one word that always comes to my mind is “Warrior”.  She has a warrior spirit and is that one player you want on your team in any situation.  Congrats young lady!
