MAC TOURNAMENT: Golden Flashes Advance With 67-61 Win Over Ohio

The Golden Flashes of Kent State will play Akron for the MAC Championship and tournament bid tomorrow night after defeating the Ohio Bobcats 67-61 in tonight’s night cap.  The Golden Flashes overcame an early first half deficit, to eventually go on a 15-point run and never look back from there.

Kent was paced by a trio of high scorers tonight as Malique Jacobs had 19, Sincere Carry 16 and Tervell Beck with 10.  The Bobcats countered with 20 from Ben Vander Plas, 15 from Mark Sears and 10 from Jason Carter.

The game started off fairly even with both teams hitting big shots throughout the first 8 minutes as Ohio built a modest 15-10 lead.  It was then that Kent State went on an incredible 15-0 run to blow the game wide open and take a 25-15 lead with 5:45 to play in the first half.

This run was thanks in part to several buckets by Beck, Hamilton, Garcia and Carry.  The run was a combination of fast breaks and solid jump shooting.  The only three came at the end from Giovanni Santiago. The Gold Flashes would then take a commanding 31-23 lead into the break.

The Bobcats had runs of their own in the second half, but could never get closer than a few buckets, and trailed the entire way.  Kent State will now face Akron who knocked off Toledo earlier tonight, in tomorrow’s championship game.
