MAC ANNOUNCES TOP INSTITUTIONAL AWARDS FOR 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR

Cleveland, Ohio – The top Mid-American Conference (MAC) institutional awards and final standings for the Reese Trophy and Jacoby Trophy were announced by the Conference office today.

Miami was honored with the Reese Trophy in men’s competition and Miami was also honored with the Jacoby Trophy in women’s competition.

For the sixth time in program history and the first time since 2013, Miami University was honored with the Jacoby Trophy, recognized as the top women’s program in MAC.

The Miami RedHawks compete in 10 women’s sports and during the 2018-19 academic year and won the MAC women’s field hockey championship for the second consecutive year and fourth time in program history and won the MAC women’s tennis championship for the sixth time in program history and the first time since the 2015 season.

In women’s basketball, the RedHawks finished second in the MAC East Division with a 13-5 MAC record, 23-9 overall, and the No. 3 seed in the MAC women’s basketball tournament and received an invitation with the WNIT Tournament.

Miami finished tied for first in volleyball in the MAC East Division with a 13-3 league record, 22-8 overall, and the No. 2 seed in the MAC volleyball championship.

Miami lost to Eastern Michigan in the volleyball championship match and received an invitation to the National Volleyball Invitational Championship (NVIC).

The RedHawks won the softball regular season with a 16-4 league record, 34-14 overall, and were the No. 1 seed in the MAC softball championship. Miami lost to eventual MAC champion Toledo in the MAC tournament.

In cross country, Miami finished third in the MAC championship. In swimming & diving, Miami finished fourth in the MAC championship with 486 team points.

In track and field, the RedHawks finished the outdoor season with a sixth-place finish with 70 team points in the MAC championship and tenth overall at the MAC indoor championship.

Miami University won the Reese Trophy as the top men’s athletic program from the MAC for the 24th time in program history and for the first time since 2005.

Miami competes in seven men’s sports and during the 2018-19 academic year. Miami programs won Conference titles in cross country for the first time in 1998 and the men’s swimming and diving championship for the first time since 2006 with 957.5 team points and the program’s eighth overall MAC championship.

In outdoor track & field, Miami finished third in the Conference meet with 139 team points, while the football program finished tied for second in the MAC East Division with a 6-2 league record, 6-6 overall on the year.

Miami finished the baseball season ranked fourth in the league with a 15-11 MAC record, 36-18 overall, and the No. 4 seed in the recent MAC baseball championship.

In golf, Miami finished with a team score of 603 for a tie for sixth-place at the MAC tournament. In basketball, the RedHawks finished the season as the No. 9 seed with a 7-11 MAC record, 15-17 overall record.

For the Reese and Jacoby Trophies, points are awarded based on each school’s finish, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school.

The men’s trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese. Reese was the first-ever MAC Commissioner and served the conference from its inception in 1946 until 1964.

The women’s trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby. Jacoby was the MAC Commissioner from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women’s athletics into the conference structure.
