Lutheran West uses 10-2 fourth quarter run to pull away from Hawken, 67-55

Gates Mills, Ohio – Lutheran West used a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from Hawken, 67-55, Saturday afternoon. The victory extended their win streak to eight games.

Quinn Petersen kicked off the game with a three-pointer to give Hawken the early lead. Derek Fairley hit a three of his own to tie the score back up. The Hawks were able to keep pace throughout the quarter, and took the lead thanks to a David Dettelbach layup. He converted the and one, and Hawken led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Lutheran West outscored Hawken, 18-11, to take a 33-26 lead going into the halftime break. They did so thanks to an 8-2 run when they were leading 25-24.

DJ Robinson hit the latter of his two triples, Boubacar Djigo tipped in a miss, and Derek Fairley converted a floater.

Hawken responded with a run of their own to cut their deficit to 36-34 with 3:37 left in the third. This was due to baskets from Dom Johnson and Edward Ross. But this was as close as the Hawks would get the rest of the way.

Lewis Smith responded with a putback off a miss. Jamie Peterson added a pair of buckets to increase the lead to 42-34.

Lutheran West led 42-37 at the end of the third quarter. But the Longhorns pulled away in the fourth thanks to a 10-2 run.

Junior guard Lewis Smith hit a three to start the scoring in the fourth. Hawken responded with a layup from sophomore guard Taj Caver.

Boubacar Djigo had a putback jam on one possession. He followed up a Hawken miss with a three on the following possession to give the Longhorns a 50-39 lead.

DJ Anderson added a pair of free throws to pad the lead to 52-39.

Hawken would trim their deficit to 54-45 with 3:25 remaining, and to 56-48 with about two minutes left. But the Longhorns had a response each time, hanging on to secure the win.

They spread the ball around Saturday afternoon, with nine players scoring at least once. Five players also finished in double figures.

Junior forward Boubacar Djigo had 14. Sophomore guard Derek Fairley had 13, and seniors DJ Robinson and Jamie Peterson had 11 and ten, respectively. Junior Lewis Smith had ten to round out the double figure scoring.

Lutheran West (11-5) takes on Trinity in CVC Metro Division play Tuesday evening.

Hawken (9-9) hosts Beachwood in  CVC Chagrin Division play Monday evening. They were led by sophomore guard Taj Caver’s 12 points, followed by ten each from junior DJ Johnson and senior Edward Ross.
