Lutheran West got their first win versus the Madison Blue Streaks on homecoming weekend by a score of 7-6. The game was scoreless heading into the 4th quarter until the Longhorns struck first with a touchdown by J’Leon Isom and the extra point by Logan Lang with 17 seconds left in the game. The Blue Streaks had one opportunity left and capitalized. The kick return was fielded at the 54 with 10 seconds left. Madison quarterback Will Randal Jr. threw an incomplete pass to run the time down to four seconds. Then, at the last play of the game he threw a hail mary to receiver Will Smith as the clock hit zero. They went for the win and the two point conversion but was intercepted by De’ Von McDougle as time expired.
The Blue Streaks put up a good fight until the last minute of the game. James Poe led the run game with 45 yards but it was the passing that really kept them in the game. Randal Jr. had six completions for 138 yards and one touchdown pass. He distributed the ball to two five different receivers all having over 10 yards. James Poe and Ryan Radkowski had 14 and 13 yards, respectively. But it was Knolan Albert with 22 yards, Mac Steele with 35 yards, and Will Smith with 54 yards leading the totals at the end of the game. The Blue Streak defense was led by several guys. Dakota Aufdenberg led the team with 10 tackles, Joey Fioritto had nine, six of them being solo tackles. Cameron Mullen had eight, Mac Steele with seven including an interception, and Dominic Lawrence with six.
The Longhorn run was led by Cortlon Campbell and J’Leon Isom, those were the two factors for the offense. Campbell had 116 yards and a long of 41, while Isom had 82 and a long of 15. Campbell also had a pass of 48 yards to Elijah John. The offense had opportunities to score multiple times prior to the last second touchdown. Jace Palmer threw an interception in the end zone, they failed to convert a 4th and 1 both inside the 15 yard line, and kicker Logan Lang missed a field goal late into the second half. However, it was the Longhorn defense that really stepped up to bring home their first win. Cortlon Campbell also led the Longhorn defense with six tackles, two of them being for a loss. Mykel Robinson and Denver Scott also played big roles on defense with six tackles, respectively. Sam Justice, Carlos Hall, and Winner Division also pitched in with several good tackles. De’ Von McDougle also had a clutch last minute interception to secure the win for the Longhorns.
The Horns defense looks to keep the momentum going at home again next week versus Perry. Madison on the other hand looks to bounce back at Lakeside on Friday.
