ROCKY RIVER, OH – The St. Ignatius Wildcats came out on top tonight in a battle of powerhouses at Lutheran West. Quinn Woidke and Reece Robinson led the way for the Wildcats. Each player dropped 20 plus points in the contest.
Early in the game, Lutheran West and St. Ignatius were swapping baskets. Neither team could get any momentum. That was until halfway through the opening period, the Wildcats started a massive scoring run.
From 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter to 5 minutes left in the 2nd, St. Ignatius went on a whopping 22-3 scoring run. During that run, the Longhorns did not score for over 7 minutes. The Wildcat defense was wreaking havoc on the Lutheran West offense. Tough shots were not falling for the Longhorns, and the Wildcats were not allowing them any second chance opportunities. St. Ignatius held their biggest lead of the contest at 33-14 following the scoring run.
Reece Robinson and Jack Zapolnik were carrying the load offensively for Ignatius. Zapolnik dropped 7 points in the opening quarter for the Wildcats. Followed by 7 points from Robinson in the second quarter. Despite the deficit, Lutheran West was still fighting. A couple of 3-pointers kept the game close for the Longhorns heading into the break. Ignatius held a 42-29 lead at the half.
The Longhorns continued to show fight in the 3rd quarter. Senior guard Derek Fairley began to find his shot as well. Fairley dropped 9 of Lutheran West’s 16 points in the quarter. Their defense stepped up as well. After allowing 20 and 22 points respectively in the opening 2 quarters, the Wildcats scored just 13 points in the 3rd. Lutheran West outscored Ignatius in the quarter, but still trailed by 10 heading into the final frame.
As quickly as the 4th quarter started, Lutheran West got themselves right back into the game. In just 2 minutes, the Longhorns went on a 10-0 scoring run to tie the game up at 55. Freshman guard Jakaris Shelton was a key part to the comeback. Shelton played hounding defense that created turnovers and fastbreak opportunities for the Longhorns. He was responsible for 5 of the 10 points scored during the run.
However, Quinn Woidke and Reece Robinson would take the game over from there for the Wildcats. Woidke and Robinson were the only 2 players to score for St. Ignatius in the 4th, but that is all they needed. Following Lutheran West’s scoring run, Woidke knocked down multiple shots to give Ignatius momentum right back.
The Wildcats would end the game on another massive scoring run of 19-5 to give them a big win. Quinn Woidke scored a whopping 16 of his 23 points in the final period. Clutch only begins to describe the type of play Woidke played with tonight. By the final buzzer, the St. Ignatius Wildcats handed the Lutheran West Longhorns their first loss of the season by a score of 76-64.
The road does not get any easier for the Wildcats as they will host the Lutheran East Falcons on Friday, January 26th at 7:30PM. The Falcons are led by Michigan State commit Jesse McCulloch and boast a 13-1 record.
