Looking Back On The Last 5 Years Of The Silver Rail Rivalry

September 4, 2015

Final – Avon 31  Avon Lake 7

Only the second game of my sports writing career, and also my first taste of the Silver Rail Rivalry.  I was never the same as I witnessed the extremely talented Jake Sopko light up the Shoremen defense.  Sopko went off for 3 passing touchdowns and one rushing as well in the 31-7 route of Avon Lake.

Gerrett Choat also had a big night for the Eagles as they soared to victory with little issue. Will Heilman had one of the touchdown catches from Sopko as well. The crowd was roaring, the tension was thick, I was hooked!

Final – Avon 31 Avon Lake 7

This game was caked in drama before the opening kickoff could even take place.  Sophomore Ryan Maloy had started the Eagles opening week game against Strongsville and looked awfully good in the 21-14 victory over the Mustangs.

There was a rumor amongst writers floating around that Coach Elder may start the sophomore again in Week Two against their rival, over Senior Matt Kelly.  Elder stuck by his senior however and the call was for Kelly to start.

It was the right call because after a slow start in which the Shoremen led 7-0 after one, Kelly would snap out of it and the Eagles would roll to victory on the road over Avon Lake 31-7 once again.  The Eagles run game was clicking on all cylinders that night as well, and after a tight start, it was never close from there. For the second straight year the Eagles won 31-7.

Final – Avon Lake 27  Avon 26

The Avon Lake Shoremen came into Avon and knocked off the Eagles in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs.  This Friday night in Avon, the Shoremen will look to do it again.  That night ended in thrilling fashion as Avon Eagle signal caller Matt Kelly was knocked out of the game with injury, and the Shoremen picked off Sophomore backup Ryan Maloy to seal the victory in the closing moments.  The Eagles had needed just a field goal to win before the pick.

This was also the final win in the head coaching career of Avon Lake legend Dave Dlugosz who would turn over the reigns to current head coach Matt Kostelnik after the season. Also, if my memory serves me correctly, this was the last time the Avon Eagles lost a game at home. They were 10-0  in the regular season coming into that game and hadn’t lost at home since playing Dustin Crumm and Midview the year before.
