ROCKY RIVER, OH – In a physical battle at Lutheran West, the Longhorns came out on top in a hard-fought matchup. Ava Adya and Ce Grant led the way in scoring with 12 a piece. It was once again the long ball that was working for Adya as she knocked down 4 triples in the contest.
The first quarter was not kind to the Longhorns however, as the Cougars outscored the Longhorns 16-8. Ella Zampedro and Avery Budrys Rini each knocked down a pair of 3-balls. Carmella Sowers wrapped up the scoring with 4 of her game-high 23 points in the opening quarter.
Lake Catholic was constantly using their height as an advantage. They were constantly getting in passing lanes throughout the opening 2 quarters. Despite their strong 1st quarter and solid defense, the 2nd quarter belonged to Ava Adya and the Longhorns.
Adya led the Longhorns in scoring with 9 in the second quarter. All of which came on 3 triples. Her strong shooting pushed the Longhorns back into the game. Ella McCarty closed out the scoring with 4 in the quarter. Lutheran West’s defense stepped up as well in the quarter by holding the Cougars to just 5 points. Heading into the break, the game was knotted up at 21.
Carmella Sowers poured it on in the 3rd quarter for the Cougars. She scored 10 points including the final 8 points of the frame for Lake Catholic. That extended her scoring total in the game to 19. Despite the impressive performance, Lutheran West carried their offensive play into the 2nd half.
They outscored Lake Catholic 20-13 in the 3rd quarter to give them a 7-point lead heading into the final quarter of play. Ava Adya knocked down her 4th triple of the ball game in the quarter. Ce Grant and Taylor Albrecht each added one of their own as well. Maddie Kandrach and Aliciana Medina were working inside during the quarter. They scored 5 and 4 points respectively in the 3rd.
The final quarter was as physical as the game got. Multiple players received technical fouls throughout the quarter as tempers were flaring. Scoring was nearly cut in half from the prior quarter as well. Lake Catholic outscored Lutheran West 10-9 in the final frame and fell short of a comeback. At the final buzzer, the Lutheran West Longhorns came out on top 50-44.
With their victory tonight, the Lady Longhorns advanced to 14-8 on the season. As their regular season ends, they will await the winner of Cuyahoga Falls (20th seed) and Cloverleaf (38th seed), in the 2nd round of the OHSAA Tournament. For Lake Catholic, they fell to 8-13 with the loss and will host the Kirtland Hornets (11-9) on Wednesday, February 14th at 7:30 pm.
