Laurel Handles Business Behind Strong Start over Elyria Catholic to Advance to Division IV Region 13 Finals

The No. 1‑ranked Laurel Gators (19‑4) wasted no time reminding everyone why they sit atop Division IV. Their defensive pressure, early energy, and senior leadership powered them past Elyria Catholic, ending the Panthers’ strong 18‑7 campaign.

Laurel jumped out to a 19‑4 first‑quarter lead behind seniors Tristan Williams and Sydnee Robinson. Robinson opened the night with two buckets inside despite battling 6’0″ junior forward Claire Petrus, and Williams followed by taking command of the scoring and tempo.

After the game, head coach David Meyer emphasized how crucial that start was, especially on a night when shots simply weren’t falling.
“I felt like we struggled all night getting our shots off,” Meyer said. “We preached all year we will have a night where nobody is hitting shots. I didn’t think it would be the regional semis, but we grounded in to the girls to pick up the pace on defense.”

The Gators listened. Their defensive intensity forced 21 turnovers, allowing them to maintain control even through the shooting slump.

Praise for Robinson’s Impact

Robinson’s presence inside helped set the tone early, and both her coach and teammates acknowledged how important she was against EC’s size.
“We knew we needed a big night from our bigs due to their size,” Meyer said. “We wasn’t perfect, but we got the job done.”

Williams, who has shared four years of varsity basketball with Robinson, echoed that sentiment.
“Me and Syd have been together on this journey for four years. She’s a captain alongside myself and Liv (Scheider) and we have tough and deep conversations all the time. She’s been so much better rebounding and setting the pick and roll. We want to win a state title together.”

From there, Williams erupted for another signature performance. The UNLV commit knocked down buzzer beaters at the end of both the first and second quarters and finished with 27 points, 4 steals, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds in a game where she had to manufacture offense all night long.
