Lamar Sperling rushes Hoban to a victory over Walsh Jesuit 49 to 30

Walsh started their second drive on their own 30-yard line after stopping Hoban, but unfortunately after two plays, the Warriors turned the ball over on a tipped ball interception at their own 26-yard line. Hoban took advantage of this good fortune and scored on two plays with a 17-yard touchdown run by Lamar Sperling.

Walsh started their second drive on their own 20-yard line, and they looked to answer the Hoban touchdown. With a great sense of urgency, the Warriors moved the ball down the field and quickly scored on a 17-yard quarterback run by Matt Natale.

Urgency was in the air tonight, because after receiving the ball at the 50-yard line compliments of a great kickoff run, Hoban used only three plays on the ground to take the lead back on a 38-yard touchdown run by Sperling.

If urgency was the title of the first quarter, then penalties would be the name of this second quarter, because after a committing couple of their own penalties, the Knights were forced to punt from their own 5-yard line. With a short punt from the Hoban 5-yard line, the Warriors were gifted with starting from the Knights 35-yard line.

Walsh with great field position, used their combo of running backs to move to the Hoban 3-yard line with 6:21 left in the half. After two plays, the Warriors was able to tie the game with a 2-yard touchdown run by Justin Bremner.

Hoban starting at their own 25-yard line, must have reached back into the first quarter to grab that sense of urgency they once had. In two plays, the Knights used their run game to gain 50 yards and land on the Warriors 25-yard line.

With 1:38 on the clock Hoban was able to score on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Jayvian Crable.

With just a little over 1 minute left in the half, Walsh started their next drive on their own 44-yard line. Feeding off some of Hoban’s urgency, Walsh was able to move down to the Hoban 21-yard line in a couple of quick plays.

After a few passes that resulted into moving to the 15-yard line, the Warriors was able to score on a 30-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in the half. Archbishop Hoban 21 Walsh Jesuit 17.

After an exciting two quarters, Hoban started the second half with the ball at their own 30-yard line. It only took two running plays for the Knights to get into the Warriors territory and after one 37 yard passing play, Hoban was able to add to their score behind a 1-yard Sperling touchdown run.

Walsh looking to stay in this game, started their second half first drive at their own 20-yard line, but they could not make any head way and went three and out on their possession. The Warriors punted the ball back to the Knights, who started their next driven at their own 47-yard line. With 8:30 on the clock, Hoban knew that they were firmly in control of this game, so they went to their bread-and-butter ground game.

The Knights, even though they were hampered by two big yardage penalties, decided to ride the tail of their running back Lamar Sperling, who was able to score his fourth touchdown on a 45-yard run up the left side line to increase the Hoban lead.

After a gutsy fourth down conversion, the Warriors were able to move the ball to the Knights 47-yard line, but their luck ended there, after they failed to convert another 4th down run.

Hoban, with the ball on their own 47 and 3 minutes left in the quarter, committed a penalty that pushed them back to their 39-yard line; but the Knights handed the ball back to their star running back, who took the hand off for 61 yards for another rushing touchdown.

At the 1:12 mark, Hoban started their drive at their 25-yard line and with no sense to do anything quickly, the Knights ran two plays to end the quarter and continue their drive into the final quarter.

4th Quarter

Heading into the final quarter and leading by 18, Hoban went to the ground on their drive. After pounding the ball up the middle a couple time, the Knights used a 39-yard reverse run by Markin McKinnie to score another touchdown and pad their lead even more.

Walsh, looking at a very dire situation, took over their possession at their own 20-yard line. The Warriors went to the air once again and moved the ball to the Knights’ 37-yard line with 4:32 left on the clock. After getting a couple 1st downs, the Warriors moved the ball down the Knights’ 13-yard line, before scoring on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Natale to Ochei.

Walsh, with no timeouts left and no way to stop the Hoban run game, had no choice but to bow down to the Knights, who ran the clock out to end the game. 49 Walsh Jesuit 30 Final
