Parma Heights, OH- Holy Name earns their first win on home soil this season with a 7-2 victory over Lakewood in Kylee Blinky’s first game against her former team.
The Rangers rolled into Parma Heights and were ready to play as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Mia Carroll-Greaves opened the scoring with an RBI double. With the bases loaded, Gaby Carroll-Greaves struck out, but the ball got past Holy Name catcher Ava Posa. Carroll-Greaves jumped on the down angle of the ball and stole home. Marissa Showers would end the inning on the following at-bat with a groundout to Bailey Garlow at shortstop.
On the mound, Mia Carroll-Greaves was tasked with shutting down a hungry HN lineup. Aubrey Stephens hit the ball into center and would reach via an error. On the ensuing at-bat, Sami Zabak gave the ball a ride. She would earn an RBI double to get one run back. The Lakewood defense settled back in right after and recorded the next two outs on groundouts. After one inning, the Rangers led 2-1.
Reagan Vavro started to fully settle into the contest as she retired the Lakewood side in order with two strikeouts and a groundout. In the home half of the inning, Carroll-Greaves followed suit as she retired the side in order with one strikeout and two pop outs.
Emily Gillick would open the third with a walk. She would press her luck trying to steal second, but Posa gunned her down from behind the dish. This play would prove to be the turning point as it was all HN after as Carroll-Greaves and Bower grounded out on the following at-bats.
The defensive momentum turned into offensive momentum as Stephens hit an RBI single, scoring Emmalee Majoros who singled to start the inning. Then, Bailey Garlow hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence to give the Green Wave the lead 5-2. Blinky followed the homer with a triple that would lead to her scoring on a sacrifice bunt from Posa. Heading into the fourth, HN lead 6-2.
The offense slowed down for both teams in the fourth. Combined, Carroll-Greaves and Vavro had five strikeouts. Maddy Magda would record the only hit in the fifth for Lakewood as this single was only the second hit of the game for the Rangers and the first since Carroll-Greaves’ first inning double. Speaking of Carroll-Greaves, she would be relieved by Ella Bower. She would strike out Garlow and get out of the inning with the only baserunner reaching via an error.
Lakewood loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but the Namer defense did their job led by Vavro who recorded a strikeout to get out of the jam. Stephens struck out in the home half of the inning but reached on a dropped third strike. This led to Majoros scoring from third. With the score 7-2, Vavro finished the game as Garlow threw across the diamond to record the final out.
After starting 6-0, Lakewood has dropped their last two games. They have a trip to Magnificat Wednesday afternoon as the Rangers look to get back to winning ways. Holy Name now sits at 2-1 in conference play with Elyria Catholic set to head to Parma Heights Wednesday for the GLC Holy War.
