As the OHSAA State Tournament begins this week, there is one player in Lorain County that is going unnoticed and that may lead to several upsets along the way. If you have been reading Kee On Sports all year and last year, you have seen us mention Amherst Comet Sensation Kristen Kelley numerous times.
She is the only 10th grader listed in the top ten for Points, Rebounds & Assists not only in the very strong SWC conference but all of Lorain county. She is averaging close to 15 pts, 9.5 rebs and 2.7 assists per game.
I’ve been a fan of Kelley and the Comets since day one of their freshman year. What makes Kelley special is that she hustles after every ball, no matter the score. Even on a team with a sub 500 record, it doesn’t matter because Kelley keeps them in every game with her ability to crash the boards, find outlet passes or follow her own shots.
Kelley has talent in her genetics, and the makings of a great leader. She plays aggressive and fierce and her teammates build off of that. Each year I see a ton of talent from a team that no one is really focusing on because of their record, and the Comets are one of those teams. With Kelley however, it is impossible to miss her talent and drive.
Kelley had 21 points in their opening round playoff game yesterday afternoon against Valley Forge. The Comets will now take on SWC Rivals The North Ridgeville Rangers this coming Thursday night in North Ridgeville, a game that Kee On Sports will be calling.
In general, this Amherst team is hard not to like. Jayla Cruz was making a strong statement for sixth woman of the year as a freshman but is now starting because of how good she was doing. She is tough and battles after every ball. Peyton Roberts is slowly starting to find her stroke again on offense and is the type of player that can explode any game. I absolutely love what Roberts brings to the Comets.
Ava Darmos will be fully recovered from injury soon and that spells trouble for the opposition. I noticed it last year with Darmos that she has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. She is a student of the game.
Kayla Ferancy is quickly developing into one of the best point guards in the game. This was something I noticed from her last year, and she has taken the next step on both sides of the ball. In a conference where guard play is so big, Ferancy is one to watch.
Natalie Pleban may get the shout outs and highlights from sinking the long ball, but truly when you watch her play, it is her defense that helps this team the most. Pleban is a goalie at soccer, and you can just tell how that athletic ability helps her on defense.
When you mix in a Bradyn Silvasy three ball along with the energy Jocelyn George brings every time she checks in, this team is 8 deep.
I have had the pleasure of watching this young lady for 2 years now and she is the real deal. She can score inside and outside . She is a great rebounder and is tough as they come . She looks for her teammates and is very unselfish. She and her teammates deserve a coach that knows how to coach girls. I know this coach has been getting bashed as of late but it’s obvious he has no clue . Go comets ☄️
