by The Boyle County Rebels came into underdogs to the St. Ed’s Eagles as they were the 12th ranked team in the country. But right away it was clear that the 4 straight state champs could hang with St Eds. The game was back and forth throughout the whole first half but Boyle Counties prolific offense was just too much to handle for the Eagles. That offense was led by West Virginia commit Montavin Quisenberry who could seemingly do it all in the game finishing with 4 touchdowns, 3 on the ground and 1 passing through the air. The Rebels scored on every drive apart from one and won the game 38-21 snapping St Ed’s 12 game win streak and increasing theirs to 23.
Boyle County won the coin toss and decided to receive. Their game plan was clear from the start that they wanted their two best playmakers, Senior Running back Demauriah Brown and West Virginia commit Montavian Quisenberry, to have the football in their hands. Whether it was a direct snap, screen pass or handoff, they were both moving down field with ease. The drive ended with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Senior quarterback Baylor Murphy to tight end Seneca Driver, making the game 7-0 early.
St. Ed’s started their first drive at their own 40 yard line and drove down the filed with a nice mix of pass and run. After a few highlight plays from Junior running back Brandon White the Eagles found himself with a 4th and 8 at the 23 yard line. Wanting to knot up the game Ed’s made the tough decision to go for it. The risk would pay off in a huge way as Senior quarterback Thomas Csanyi found wide receiver Luke Hess in the endzone where he made an athletic touchdown grab to tie the game up at 7 with 1:10 to go in the 3rd quarter.
The duo of Brown and Quisenberry continued to give St. Ed’s problems on the next drive as Quisenberry threw a 20 yard pass on a trick play and went on to finish the drive off with a direct snap 2 yard Touchdown run. After the PAT the Rebels reclaimed the lead 14-7 with 5:52 left in the half.
The Eagles next drive went very similar to their first as they chipped away at the Rebel defense by picking up first down after first down. Brandon White continued to shine as he highlighted the drive with a tough 15 yard run and a 2 yard direct snap touchdown evening the score back up at 14 with 3 minutes left in the first half.
The Rebels looked like they may have the first game’s punt after Eds Junior defensive back Brodon Moore picked up an 8 yard sack pushing Boyle County to 3rd and long. However the Rebels countered with a monster play of their own. Montavin Quisenberry received the ball on an end around where he seemed to be caught for a loss of yard. That was until he saw Senior receiver Geo Brown wide open down field for a 69 yard touchdown pass putting them up 21-14.
The Eagles would not hang their heads as they went right back to work now in their 2 minute offense where they moved the ball right down the field. Quarterback Thomas Csanyi would cap the quick drive off with an 11 yard touchdown run tying the game up at 21 ending an action packed first half.
The Eagles led the 2nd half off with the game’s first punt giving the red hot Rebels the football. Their offense remained the Montavin Quisenberry show to start the half. He used his elusiveness and shifty moves to drive Boyle County down the field, capping it off with a nice 20 yard gain and a 7 yard touchdown run on the following play making the game 28-21 with 4:30 left in the 3rd quarter.
St. Ed’s struggles continued as quarterback Thomas Canyi threw the game’s first interception to Junior cornerback Jakeem Ray. The Rebels would start their drive at their own 41 as the 3rd quarter came to an end.
Quarterback Baylor Murphy and running back Demauriah Brown both started the 4th quarter off hot leading the Rebels into Eagles territory. The drive ended with another Montavin Quisenberry touchdown increasing their lead to 35-21 with 9 minutes left to play.
The Eagles came out on their next drive needing a score to keep them in the game. The drive started out nice but was abruptly ended when Thomas Csanyi’s pass was intercepted by none other than Montavin Quisenberry. He returned it 66 yards all the way to the 9 yard line. The Rebels would settle for a 24 yard Field Goal from Senior Andrew Carr making the game 38-21 with just over 4 minutes to play.
The Eagles were not able to do anything else and the game ended 38-21. They look to bounce back next week at home against Elder from Cincinnati, while Boyle county plans to stay in the win column as they visit the Rockcastle County Rockets in Mt. Vernon Kentucky.
