The Akron Zips (3) take on archrival Kent State Golden Flashes (2), for the right to head to the MAC championship game. These teams have split the season series against each other as they looked to settle the score in a rubber match with everything on the line.
Kent State won this contest in a title contested game that relied on free throws at the very end. Kent State took the cake 73-69 in a game that was the most highly anticipated contests of the tournament thus far. Sincere Carry went off with a solid shooting performance going 9 for 18 from the field with 21 points.
Both teams started out guns blazing, Akron found ways to get the ball inside while Kent State became red hot from the arch. Castaneda tried to get things started early, Kent’s defense doubled him in certain spots and kept the ball out of his hands. This forced the Zips to give the keys to the offense to Enrique Freeman who dominated the first half on behalf of the Zips.
Castaneda’s struggles helped push Kent out to an early lead, Sincere Carry and company fired away at the three-point line with some early success. The Flashes jumped to a 34-19 lead, it felt as if the Flashes could run away with it before half.
Thanks to Freemans 16 points the Zips found themselves only down by two points with less than a minute left before Carry nailed a mid-range shot before half ended to make the score 38-34, advantage Kent State.
Kent State repeated their hot start from the start of the game as Carry became hot from three going three for five early in the second half. Carry and Miryne Thomas dominated the second half as both could not be stopped.
The Flashes jumped out to a 10-point lead and maintained it for much of the half. Trendon Hankerson attempted to get the Zips back in the game with a few threes but failed to be perfect from behind the arch.
Akron had to slowly get back into the game by a few late game heroics by Castaneda who drained a three from range to make the score 71-64 with two minutes left to play.
Akron continued to get closer to the Kent State lead as a big time shot made the score 73 to 69. Kent State increased the lead by two thanks to a deuce of free throws made by Jacobs. With an Akron miss Kent State was able to drain out the clock and live another day.
