It is already coming up on week seven of the 2022 college football season, meaning that is already almost half way through. And the Kent State Golden Flashes have a disappointing record, at 2-4 through six. This is not the record that I was hoping for. And this week they take on the 4-2 Toledo Rockets in Toledo. There are some things the Golden Flashes are going to need to fix if they want to stay in the game.

Number one is ball security. The last two games have seen the Flash offense as well as the special teams have a hard time holding onto the ball. In the week five matchup against the Ohio Bobcats saw this on full displays. Collin Schlee had numerous fumbles in this game, while most were recovered by the Flashes some were not. Then running back Marquez Cooper had a fumble this game, which was not recovered by the team This is something that Coach Sean Lewis had discussed in the post game press conference, saying that they have to be better at that. The name of the game is football and if you can’t protect the ball you cannot expect to win.

Then last week against the Miami Redhawks saw the continuing struggle of the Flashes holding onto the ball. This time we saw Schlee, Dante Cephas, and Raymond James, which was on a punt return, all struggling to maintain ball control. This is something that the Flashes can’t continue to do if they expect to make it back to the MAC championship game.

Number two is the penalties. Against the Bobcats, the Flashes were getting numerous penalties called on them. This is something I had not expected to be an issue with the team. Penalties that cost them to not score when they were in scoring range. Against Toledo, Kent State can’t be as sloppy with the penalties if they expect to come away with the upset.

The 2-4 is very disappointing. The team coming into the year had very high expectations. A lot of the media had expected them to be one of the best teams in the MAC East, the team itself did not change their goals this season after losing Dustin Crumm, it was all right there for them.

A real main problem for the 2-4 start has to be the out of conference schedule. To start the season at Washington then the following week they have to go to Oklahoma. Then two weeks later they played the defending national champions, the Georgia Bulldogs. It has been a nightmare for the Flashes. While hanging close with Georgia was impressive it was still a 17 point loss. The team should have been better prepared to handle the MAC schedule after the difficult start.

This week and beyond are going to have to be wins. If Kent State loses three more games, they will be no longer bowl eligible, so this week against the Rockets the ball security must be cleaned up, and the penalties if the Flashes look to turn this lackluster start to the season around.
