The Wagon Wheel game started off with the Kent State offense, who showed a strong run game on their first three plays but got stopped cold by a stifling Akron run defense. Starting QB Collin Schlee warmed up in pads but had street clothes on during the game. When asked about when he found out when Schlee would not play coach Sean Lewis said “at kickoff, when he didn’t start that’s when I knew he wasn’t going to play”.

Akron started off fast on offense due to DJ Irons finding Alex Adams for 80 yards to take an early lead going up 7-0. Akron continued to add on their lead with a 22 yard field goal increasing the lead.

Kent looked out of it early but found a way to jump back into the game. The Flashes gathered itself thanks to the play of Zayin West who seemed to be in the back field every play. The offense led by Devin Kargman, the freshman who got his first start came up big for his team.

Two straight scores from the Flashes gave them the lead 14-10 in the second quarter off of a 58 yard rush from Bryan Bradford and a 35 yard reception from Kargman to Devontez Walker. The momentum continued to bounce back and forth through the majority of the game.

DJ Irons led a drive to retake the lead off of a short yardage QB run. It took Kent little to no time to move the ball down the field to set up a Kargman pass to his favorite option on the day in Walker. At halftime the score settled at 21-17 in favor of the Flashes.

The second half continued to be excited as the Kent State defense forced the second pick of the day from DJ Irons and transitioned it into a offensive touchdown. Kent State would not score another touchdown on the day as the Akron defense stepped up to give their offense a chance.

DJ Irons rushed for his second on the ground, third overall to bring his team within a score. Kent State followed this with a field goal at the very start of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to nine 33-24.

The Flashes held the Zips at bay for the entire fourth quarter. Irons led his Zips down the field with five minutes left hoping to bring the lead within two. Kent State came up big throwing pressure at Irons outmanning the offensive line to bring home the sack. The Zips made the field goal to bring the score to 33-27.

Akron’s hopes depended on a onsides kick with under a minute left and no timeouts left in the game. Kent State recovered and iced the game to retain the wheel for the fourth straight year in a row.

Kent State now has four more games to not just become bowl eligible but to compete for the right to represent the MAC East in Detroit for a championship. “We do the next thing the right way… the Schedule is the schedule” -coach Lewis when asked about how to carry the momentum from this game.
