Entering this week four of the 2022 college football season Kent State’s hardest game of the season was clearly going to be this week against the top ranked team in the nation and defending champion, Georgia Bulldogs. So, how would Kent State fair today in a game that had Georgia favored by 40 plus points.

Kent State played with heart today. In a game that they were supposed to lose by 40 points. To only lose by 17 points of a final score of 39-22 was extremely impressive.

There were a lot of firsts of the season for Georgia today. This was the first time this season Georgia allowed any points in the first quarter.  This was also the first time Georgia gave up a touchdown in the first half, and it was all against the Golden Flashes.

Since 2021 Georgia has only allowed twenty points once and it was against Alabama. Now it is two times and the other opponent to score twenty points plus on them is the Kent State Golden Flashes.

Players of the game for Kent State are Devontez Walker and Colin Schlee. Walker finished the game with seven catches and 106 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 56 yard touchdown to make the game 12-10.

Then Schlee, Schlee performed good all game and played well enough for Kent State to come away with a win. Schlee finished the game with 174 yards passing and the touchdown throw to Walker.

Then for Georgia, they struggled early and often. Although they came up with the win, it was not an impressive showing.

A player worth mentioning for the Bulldogs for all the wrong reasons is wide receiver, Ladd McConkey. Although McConkey finished with six catches for 65 yards, he was dropping wide open passes all day, and passes that would have been touchdowns. And at one point he even fumbled a punt. The first half of the game is going to be a half that McConkey would love to forget.

Georgia’s quarterback Stetson Bennett also struggled in this week four matchup, Bennett may have finished with 272 yards. His receivers were dropping passes and he was overthrowing players all game. He did also throw an interception today. That pass was picked off by Montre Miller of the Golden Flashes.

This was an impressive performance for the Golden Flashes. A game that they were supposed to lose by more than 40 points and to only lose by 17, was a massive eye opener. This team played well enough to win today, and if it was against any other team. Kent State may have done just that.

Last week Coach Sean Lewis in the press conference stated that he wants that stadium to be packed, and he could not be more right. After that performance today, this team deserves that stadium to be full. And not just for the first half, but the whole game.
