Is North Olmsted Big Lots Closing A Sign of the Times?

News broke earlier this week that Big Lots will be closing 57 stores around the United States, including 4 in Northeast Ohio.  The four closing in Ohio are:

26425 Great Northern Plaza, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070

1733 Pearl Road, Brunswick, Ohio 44212

6235 Wilson Mills Road, Highland Heights, Ohio 44143

60 E. Shrock Road, Westerville, Ohio

Per their 2024 Q1( Quarter 1 ) earnings / finance report, the corporation is claiming they lost 1 billion alone, in the first three months of 2024.  This is in fact, a 11% decrease of 2023 Q1. That is just how bad things have gotten.  They filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September and expect to completely close their doors by the end of 2024.

This is yet another in a long line of Brick and Mortar stores to close their doors since January 6 of 2021.  It’s almost as if our country has taken on a new, “attitude /culture” over the last 4 years.  More and more Americans are shopping on line, and less are willing to go to work.  That alone, is perhaps the biggest cancer, not only North Olmsted and Northeast Ohio face, but the entire country.  The debate of what is a “livable wage” in 2024 has become a total joke.

Perhaps even worse then that is a teenage high school student demanding $18-$25 an hour, and then not willing to take a drug test. This same job of night stocker, cashier or even “cart boy”, paid around $8-$10 just 4 years ago.  We’ve reached a point in America where many need to put down the pipe, and pick up a work ethic instead.

Sadly, whatever you choose to blame it on, another North Olmsted staple, bites the dust.
