The Lakewood Lady Rangers overcame a late Bay Rocket rush, to hold on for the thrilling 38-32 win tonight at home. The Rangers were led by the dynamic Arianna Hueter with 23 points to match her jersey number. The always dangerous Ranger Charleigh Doxley chipped in with 10 points as well. Maeve Andrews had 4 while Addison Garrett also had a point.
The Bay Rocket offense got better as the night went on and showed a lot of heart as they actually led early into the fourth. The Rockets were led by the red-hot Nora Trefz who had 16 points, with 15 of those coming from long distance. Caroline Chilton chipped in with 8 Rocket points while Quinn O’Leary had 4 and Grace Manoloff finished with 2.
Buckets by Quinn O’Leary and Caroline Chilton spotted the Rockets a quick 4-3 lead just outside of the 3 minute mark to open the game. The Rangers responded with back-to-back buckets by Arianna Hueter who had all 7 Ranger points to start the game, before Andy Naughton connected, to draw the Rockets back to one at 7-6 with 3:19 to go in the first quarter. The Rangers went on to finish quarter ahead, 11-6 as Hueter led all scorers with 10 in the first 8 minutes of action.
The teams exchanged 3 pointers to start the second quarter, with the Rocket launch coming from Nora Trefz with 6 minutes to play, cutting the Ranger lead to 14-9. Moments later, another Trefz three ball cut the Ranger lead to 14-12 with 3:35 to play in the opening half. It was then that Ariana Hueter took over once again, with four straight points to run the Ranger lead back out to 18-12. With time winding down, Nora Trefz hit her third three of the quarter, before Maeve Andrews hit a run out, to hand the Rangers a 20-15 halftime lead.
An O’Leary layup got the Rockets cooking to start the third quarter, cutting the Ranger lead to 20-17. It stayed that wait for nearly 3 minutes before a 5-0 Ranger run led by a Hueter runner and a Doxley three pushed the lead back out to 25-17. Still down 8, it was Trefz hitting another three ball, this time to cut the lead back down to 25-20 with 2:39 to play in the third. A pair of Grace Manoloff foul shots cut it to 25-23 a bit later in the quarter as well.
A layup from Chilton gave the Rockets their first lead since the early minutes, to start the fourth quarter at 25-25, as she was fouled and nailed the free one following it to give them the advantage. Like a ping pong ball the lead bounced back several times before Lakewood took it back for good with an Hueter bank shot 3 pointer that gave the Rangers a 30-29 lead with 4:34 to play in the game, and they never looked back from their to capture the 38-32 victory.
