AVON, OH – In a game that saw dominant efforts from both starting pitchers, the Eagles got a two-run double from Andrew Falasco to take down the Titans 3-2 in 8 innings. Senior pitcher Chris Egger picked up the win for Avon, pitching the final two innings and striking out three.
In the top of the first, a walk to Michael Samarin and a single from Aidan Litherland gave Berea-Midpark two on with two out, but Avon starter Luke Holtzman got his third strikeout of the inning to end the threat.
Following a first-inning walk to Ian Cain, Titans starting pitcher Danny Bowser retired the next seven Eagles. Leading off the third inning, Dylan Papushak reached on an error, and Maddox Swisher hit a single to left field. With runners on the corners, Maddox attempted a steal of second base, and the ball soared into the outfield, allowing Papushak to score and give Berea-Midpark a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Sudbrook hit a one-out double, and after a strikeout, Falasco drew a walk. With two outs, Jason Gillespie looped a single into the outfield, plating Sudbrook and evening the score at 1-1. Over the next two innings, both pitchers kept the offenses at bay.
Gillespie drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh and Robby Sykora came in to pinch run. After a Colten Fitch single, Garret Espey hit a double, but Sykora was cut down at the plate while trying to score. With runners on second and third, Bowser got a huge strikeout to send the game to extras.
Swisher led off the top of the eighth with a single, and Solomon Skernivitz beat out a bunt single to give the Titans two on with nobody out. After a walk to Litherland, Aaron Rupp hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Swisher and gave Berea-Midpark a 2-1 lead.
In the home half of the eighth, Sam Spike drew a one-out walk, and Sudbrook followed it up with his second hit of the game, a single. With two outs, Falasco hit a ball into the outfield, and the throw to the plate sailed past the catcher, bringing home both Spike and Sudbrook to give Avon a 3-2 victory.
