How Will ABC’s The Goldbergs End?

All good things must eventually come to an end before they get stale and overdone. For ABC’s The Goldbergs, that was about 4 seasons ago, but alas, they pressed on. They continued on without the best characters on the show and it slowly got worse by the season.

Those 4 characters being

Coach Melor – Written off that he went on to coach at Fox Catcher

Pops – The actor George Segal passed away.

Lainey Lewis – They wrote her off so she could have her own spinoff, based in the 90’s with Coach Melor, and it was cancelled within two seasons.

Murray Goldberg – The actor Jeff Garlin was fired for being “too mean” to the other actors. They wrote his character off via death.

The show could have survived one of those hits, but not all 4, it was just too much to take. This combined with the same storyline set to repeat, and some weeks became so predictable, it became obnoxious.
Beverly would do something over bearing, Barry obnoxious, Murray mean, etc…. they would realize the error of their ways and make up for it with a heartfelt gesture. Rinse and repeat the very next week.

The best part of this show was the 80’s nostalgia the first few seasons, but they got far away from that the last several seasons. That was the biggest problem, it went from being a fun trip down memory lane, to having your intelligence insulted every week with the exact same storyline tempo and result.

The only reason to tune in as the show winds down is the hopeful romantic storyline that Lainey Lewis comes back one more time as foreshadowed in her short lived spinoff that her and Barry end up together.

My prediction for the ending is this. Barry and Erica both get their degree’s as Adam leaves for NYU. Lainey comes back to be with Barry once and for all. Beverly makes some grand gesture, only to be rebuked and scorned for it, only to be once again, forgiven and loved at the end.  The shows final moments take place on December 31, 1989 as the ball is set to drop, ending the 80’s.

The Goldbergs airs weekly on ABC, Wednesday nights at 8:30pm
